I did the Kelso, Washington Show last weekend. One of the fellows that I have known since I started doing shows ran into me. He said he had a box of old tiller tines that he removed from his Dad's tiller and wanted to know if I wanted them. Most people that know me know I'm a sucker for junk steel. I just couldn't turn them down. The fellow that gave me the steel asked if I could make him a knife and I said I would. Monday morning I started working on the first blade. One problem I was having was I didn't know what type of steel it was. Normally I can spark the steel and I get a pretty good idea what it was but with this steel the spark didn't look like anything I had seen before. What I do in this case is I try to match the spark with steel that I have and compare the two. I thought I tried every piece of know steel that I thought I had in my shop and couldn't match the spark. I decided to see if I could find a place in the Portland area that will test the steel and I did. After I received the quote it helped jog my my mind and I remembered I had a piece of O-1 right next to the grinder. I sparked the piece of O-1 and then I sparked the tine and it was a match. Here's the knife and sheath that I'm trading for the steel. 5" O-1 blade, iron fittings and a piece of deer crown for the handle. Been making a few 3 ply sheaths now. This is one of them.

He's getting a lot more than he expected. I felt like doing him something nice. I think he's going to give it to his 104 year old Dad.

Good on ya Big Boy. Folks can say what they may, but occasionally, that "Mystery Steel" can yield fantastic results. It is always fun to play with. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.

Great looking blade and sheath.

Robert, When I do a knife out of cast off steel there's a sense of excitement I don't have when I am using known steels. Several months ago I got 3 racks of 1932 Studebaker leaf springs. From everything I have heard Studebaker used 9260 for most there spring steel however 1932 being in the Depression I think they used pretty much what ever they could get for springs. I've always wanted a good water quenching steel and now I have a bunch of it.

Allowing for my complete distaste for crown stag, this knife LOOKS absolutely beautiful.

I really do like using a nice crown for a handle. I just took a quick look here: http://www.bladegallery.com/shopdis...ard, Raymond&gclid=CIC0oc2yyKwCFUwaQgodmHatrQ I think the crowns out number everything else.

Warren Osborne told me years ago that if we all liked the same thing that there would be a much lower birth rate, as so many women would be excluded from our affections.

It makes sense....you like crown stag, I like just about any stag except crown stag and pithy stag, and some people don't like stag at all.

It's all good.

Best Regards,
