I called a retailer yesterday to check on a backordered benchmade, and was told that Benchmade is transitioning to direct sales only, and would no longer be supplying retailers.

Is this misinformation, or a commonly known fact by everyone but myself (wouldn't be the first time, lol)?

Direct only? First I heard of this. BM stopped selling to distributors, and went exclusively to retailers. I think your retailer was ordering from a distributor instead of directly from BM, and they can't do that anymore.

Ah, that explains it. The person on the phone might not have had the finer points.

that would suck if they did go direct to the customer, their MSRP is higher then what I payed here through a canadian dealer. Now if they just cut out the middle man that may drop prices even lower for us the consumer

Does anyone remember all those horror expectations people had when this was about to happen? And how nothing changed for the buyer at the end, when it actually did happen?

He means direct to retailer without distributors in between. That retailer can buy directly from Benchmade if he likes.

Things certainly changed for the retailers who aren't on BM's list, and for all the wholesalers.

True that. I own a couple of BM's, but now that a couple of
my favorite places to purchase from aren't on the list......

BM is off my list.

Except of course that most of the stores that I buy from can't reliably get Benchmade products any more, and therefore, neither can I.

My knife store said that you have to have a building to sell Benchmade.

I think that Benchmade has the right to run its business as it deems fit.

And the other side of that coin is: as a customer, I can choose whether or not I'll buy its products.

Most everything in here is correct. I work for a retailer, and they do require a physical setting for your store but we just placed an order w/BM no turbulence for retailers there.

From what I hear you need to have a store. No web-only dealers.

SWEET, thats good news for the few actual stores out there. Maybe now they can make a little bit of $ and stay in business for a couple more years. It must be fun running a "REAL" store, paying a bunch of bills to keep afloat, spending time assisting customers, all so they can write the model # down and go buy it on-line off some part-time, out of home, wanna be dealer who undercuts everyone since they have no business expenses or problem w/ a .50 cent profit margin  Devalues the whole industry when companies just let anyone whore their products out to anyone.

I dont say this too often, props BM!

I have no sympathy at all for my local store. Even AFTER shipping and the US->CDN exchange, I can still get a knife online for HALF of what they charge at the store here. And if I buy it at the store, I have to pay tax on top of that.

I'm willing to pay a bit extra to support my local store and get the knife right away, but their prices are completely ridiculous.

Hmmm - I bought two new BMs in previous years - one from evil-bay. This year, my local Ma/Pa B&M BM pusher sold me eight more - one being this year's 760BKLTi. If I hadn't been able to fondle them, I'd likely have more money now - and certainly still just those two original BMs. Yeah, their new policy really affected me!

Seriously, a few cents/dollars more locally - and you can check it out before you buy. A local store purchase has it's merits. Actually, my local B&M store has some old stock to select from - at great prices - my reason for many purchases. Admittedly, a ninth purchase was via evil-bay - a hard to find now NIB 630 Skirmish - the secondary market has some value too.
