Something I noticed at Toolanddie.com O1 content

I was ordering some more O1 and noticed something at Toolanddie.com. Previously I ordered from their flat-stock.com link, which was for Presco O1. I clicked the link offhand to see what the Timken Latrobe link was for and you could order Badger O1 there. The Badger stuff is anywhere from $3-4 to $1-$2 cheaper per 36" bar. While it isn't a lot of $$$, every bit helps keep costs down, I suppose, so you may want to compare the two yourself. The stuff from Presco was so easy to grind and drill I almost don't want to mess with a good thing switching to Badger, and as we all learned in the O1 thread, different companies' products can make a world of difference in the steel.

Interesting, when I ordered mine a few months ago, the timkin was the more expensive of the two. I wonder which side changed? Unless it's maybe because I ordered drill rod and you got a flat bar?

I've ordered from both and they seem to look and grind the same. Haven't HTed the Timken yet.

I did some web searching on both of them,
Timkin Latrobe and Precision-Marshall. The main alloy difference seems to be that the Presco has .08/.15 percent Vanadium. Timkin seems to have much more detailed info on heat treating, etc. on their site.

My home shop is built and the KMG-1 should show up soon. I've pretty much decided that I need to get more grinding practice on something relatively easy to grind (D2 just takes too long with the number of mistakes I make) so I've been debating which one of these to order myself.

Back to lurking with all ears, er eyes, open :D

Vanadium is an optional element in O-1 and in small amounts refines grain. All O-1 should be spheroidized annealed . If it is precision ground it is made to precise dimensions and will have no decarburization. If you are forging that's a waste.

I have read your O-1 thread and wanted to say, today I tried a vinegar etch to get a hamon line on an O-1 blade I made and it came out very vivid, however this O-1, which I got from a local tool and die in Nashville, is the only batch that has done this....it also seems to take and hold the best edge...would post a pic, but I am scrap[ing pennies and can't spring for membership yet :(

All ive ever used is the Timken Latrobe and have had good luck with it. Ive never had to pay for shipping when ordering the Timken products, thats what caught my eye in the beginning. I strictly Stock removal this stuff for the exact reasons Mete mentioned. No need for precise dimensions.

I was also going to bring that up dlpierson, The vanadium isn't in Badger O1. I have seen it go up to .30 percent. Personally I would rather have it then have a cheap bar of Badger. Its not a mater of life and death, but if I see Badger for auction on eBay, I pass. I like to get Precision Marshall, I use to get it from Sheffield's supply but the shipping is awful, and I want to save up and get a whole bunch at once. I go through steel so fast and then belts and I always have more handle material and brass around then I need. I wish we could get a good researcher to find us some mill run O1 for sale. I will try again and if I see any I will let my Blade forum friends in on it. :) dlpierson, I am glad you want to get some practice in. I wish I had thought oif that before I got my first grinder. I just KNEW I could EASILY grind awesome blades, so I didn't plan on practicing. Now I feel even worse about my skills then I did when I first tried a knife. Here you are; not even got the thing yet and you're pready to dedicate to practicing. I hope you got two Horsepower or more. I know for a five HP the switch costs more then $500.00-$700.00 The thing is two horse power is reccomended for heavy stock removal which knife grinding qualifies as Heavy. when I tried a five horsepower I was grinding stainless like butter and I loved it to no end I could see just grinding and grinding and not worrying about whats next. with that.

Try a freebie foto hoster and you can post a link using the "IMG" tags in a post. I am "sparse" on the names of those places but I think Fotobucket is one and Village Foto is another. No money involved......

Bad link, Mitch. Just goes to their frontpage and asks for a login. The service I use has a feature called "create link to foto". Might be something like that on Shutterfly, too.

Good luck with it.

YW, BTW. ;) :)

I think it's because I shut down and restarted computer, which logged me out....I will try to find a better way, but you should see it now

Same thing, Mitch...sign in page for members.

Good luck with it. :)

Yeap, it came up just fine this time. Nice transition line.

Blade looks good, Mitch.

Thanks, fitzo, I like the look of the transition line...it's actually more pronounced in person.

Well, if you think the vanadium %age is important, then spending a few extra dollars per bar isn't a big deal. The size that I was looking at that was a big difference was the 3/16"x1.25x36 bar and it was about $4.25 more for the Presco than for the Badger (Timken Latrobe). The rest of the sizes I was looking at were closer to $1-$2 difference.

Thanks for the complement :p

Yes, it's a 2 horse VFD set from Dealers Electric.
