Something Spydie-related puzzles me in a Boye-ad...

I have an issue of KI that has an advertisement of Boye Knives' Prophet Companion and in the bottom of the add, it says "License agreement from Spyderco patent £'665". This has kept me wondering for a long time...I don't know if Spyderco has patented anything else than the round opening hole and the hole in the Prophet Companion isn't round...So, I'd be glad if someone could tell me more about this matter.
Thanks,
Jani

(choking) Spyderco has many, many patents. I dont know enough about them to answer this myself, but I will find out. I will go talk to Peter (bring a lunch) in the legal department in the morning. But please, if I'm not back in 3 or 4 days, please send a search party.

I thought that I had read once that Spyderco not only patented "the hole" but other "non-round" blade opening cutouts. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong.

The original patent was for the opening of a knife with one hand using a dent or hole in the blade (1981). The round hole became our tradmark many years later. The '665 patent is up next hear so I'm sure you'll see more "hole openers" but they cannot be round.

David Boye chose to honor the '665 patent despite the fact that we probably wouldn't have gone after him for the year remaining. That's just the kinda guy he is. An excellent knifemaker and designer as well.

A fact you might not know; David Boye wrote a book about making custom knives twenty years ago. Bob Terzuola learned to make knives from David's book. Lotta history in that man.

Wow, Sal, now that's what I call most excellent trivia !! I remember seeing that book many years ago, forgot about it until I ran across his name and bought one of his dendritic folders a couple years back. But to think that Terzoula learned from his book !!
Guess that shows what class and skill both have.
