Something strange...

When I look at the general FS forums by individuals, in the Customs FS by individuals, it shows that the top thread should be a listing by Starkman1 for a Tommy Gann Cowboy Bowie. If I just go into the forum, I don't see that listing anywhere. The only way I can see it is by clicking on the thread title itself as it appears when you are looking at the general FS forums by individuals.

Hopefully I am making sense here. I'm not sure what is going on, but it seems like some part of the db is not getting updated.

It's because of this and this. Threads are arranged by original post time, not by latest post, so new posts don't bump the thread back to the top. However, when you're viewing the Exchange root page, it still displays the "Last Post".

Yes, I was trying to figure it out when you responded and I think you are correct. I'm not selling a lot, nor is there urgency in what little I am selling, but from a buyer's perspective, this seems a little confusing, and makes it more difficult to keep track of changes in threads with knives that I might be interested in purchasing.

Fixed, thanks for the heads up

Yea, the previews are a little wonky right now because they are showing the last post instead of the last thread created. Honestly, I'm not sure if there is even a fix for that one, Spark. Not easily, anyway. :(

I was just about to post about it.
I just looked at the exchange and it is still happening.

Just went back looking at threads, very confusing. It going to be very hard keeping track of things if it stays that way.

As a buyer, I don't like this new setup but a little extra clicking cures it. I understand why the change was needed.

Hmm, what exactly is tripping you up?

Before, everything was just a jumble. A handful of replies to various threads could change everything. With the new system, threads stay in the exact same order you saw them in the last time you viewed them.

Here are some quick tips that might help you (and others) during this test period:
  • Threads which were created since your last visit will always appear in bold font before those you have already seen.
  • Like new threads, those which have received new replies since your last visit will appear in bold font, but will remain where they were originally.
  • Threads which existed at the time of your last visit will appear in normal font.
  • Threads you have not been to before will always appear in the 'unvisited link' color (blue by browser default.)
  • Threads which you have been to before will always appear in the 'visited link' color (purple by browser default) even when they contain new replies (and thus, are bold'd.)

If it's something else that is bothering you, do post some feedback. If it's an issue that has a workaround that perhaps you aren't familiar with yet, I'll do my best to help you through it.

This was a very significant change for many to wake up to this morning and I'm quite surprised that there hasn't been more confusion and backlash. Perhaps it's still flying under the radar to most? ;)

For one thing I guess I will have to repost the threads on my skull lanyards and monkey fists. As old as those threads are I would guess they are on page 87.

This was most likely a good idea with threads offering single items for sell but it kills threads offering a service.

Ah, I could see how that could cause some confusion for folks offering those types of services.

And yes, for the time being, it looks like a repost will be your best bet. In fact, under the forum defaults, I don't believe threads older than two weeks will even show up outside of filter adjustments and searches. :(

If you are a service provider, there's always the option of a hosted forum.

In all fairness, services shouldn't be in the Individual forums in the first place. Lanyards, sheaths, and such belong, and have always belonged, in the Makers' G&G forum. It's just that everyone got comfortable in the Individual forums and stopped using the one that was put there specifically for them. Firstly because of traffic and secondly because 90% of the forum doesn't know that there's a section specifically for selling user made gear because it's hidden away outside of the regular exchange.

In my opinion the makers' exchange should be moved to the regular exchange with the others. People making stuff should post there, dealers should post in the dealers section, and individuals should get their forums back.

We can certainly move the Knifemaker's for sale section back there. It'd probably make things easier for Stacy too.

Awesome. I think having them all in one section would be easier on everyone. I assume service providers would need to switch over to "Maker" if they haven't already, but that minor bump in the road would make it crystal clear where everything goes and get Makers (knife and other) more exposure at the same time. Not to mention letting lanyard, sheath, doodad makers have their own section with a lower turnover rate than the Ind. forum.

Thanks, Kev. You rock.

I just saw Coops Post in the other thread and I think I get it.

Two suggestions, Braillediver.

First, usethe subscribe feature. If you spot a knife that you think you might have some interest in if it were cheaper, you can subscribe to the thread in order to keep up to date with it. You can even have the forums email you the second there is activity in the thread.

To subscribe to a thread, click on 'Thread Tools" at the top of the thread, then click 'Subscribe to this Thread.' You will be taken to a drop-down menu with a few different options; choose the one that best suits your needs. You can also check your subscribed threads by going to 'User CP > Show Subscriptions' at the top of any page. This is useful to know for when you don't want the forum emailing you with updates.

My second suggestion is to manually adjust your filters. At the bottom-left of every forum there is a filters section. Click the 'Sort by' dropdown menu and select 'Last Post Time' instead of 'Thread Start Time' and voilà! Now you are looking at the forum as it used to be, before this test.

For that matter, you can also subscribe to forums themselves.
