Something to do on winter evenings

Took the little Emberlit out yesterday and it was enjoyable. But seeing that I have a mountain of Fatwood and some new Moras to play with, I went for it. Slicing these sticks took a little more effort than I expected and gave the stainless and heavy duty Companions a little work out. Both worked wonderfully.

Great little packs of instant fire, but I doubt it will take that much cotton to ignite the fatwood :)

Since the temps here are actually going below zero some now, I've spent the last few night digging out cold weather clothes :)

Thanks. It has been literaly years since I last used P.J. cotton balls. I don't even know why I made these little packs the size that I did other than they make me feel a little safer out in the cold.......The warden wants to go on a weekend trip to a larger center so I think that I am going on a surplus wool hunt. I always find it to be great fun to wander the army surplus stores. Besides, my para cord supply is getting unacceptably low.
:D
I have a set of upper\lower winter camo (mil surplus) still laying in a box somewhere. I used to wear it when shooting ptarmigan in the north. It is a great set as it is just shear enough to show some shade of the under clothes now and then, perfect really. I realized that this worked wonderfully when up there, and really looking around. The birds were not a pure white and it hit me that snow landscapes have various shades of white with shadow effects.

Looks like a great way to spend an evening! I'd guess each of those lovely packs is good enough for 3 fires. Since you're 'upnorth' already you're in a place where it makes good sense to have these types of materials always at the ready.

A lot of folks carry firestarters , but not tinder. I find it a necessity . especially around here.
When hypothermia is a risk , I don't want to waste any time gathering tinder for starter

I can build a fire as good as any one I Know. When conditions are posible that are may make a difference in life and limb I'll drop a ground/road flare in with my gear

I really find it pleasurable to spend an evening doing this type of stuff. Cool pic, looks like many experiments or fine tuning is going on there.

The condiment cup fire starters have oak pellets wax and waxed jute cord for wick/starters along with cotton or dryer lint. they will burn long enough to make a cup of tea on the twig stove. Unravel the waxed jute and it will light with a spark scape a little magnesium on to them and the will light under very adverse conditions and burn several minutes
