I like the shield-less look on knives with exceptional covers such as these!
I know exactly what you are saying. As traditional knife fans we take the entire package in when we look at these classics, and the shields you mentioned would fit perfectly on these examples. It is the absence of the shield, that my mind expected to see, that made my eye wonder and take in the knife piece by piece looking for the missing part. It was that search that allowed me to fully take in the beauty of the handles on each one. I think had those shields been on I would have loved the whole knife but perhaps would not have given as much attention to the wonderful handles.Got it in one.
I don't know. I can look at these knives and honestly say they are nice looking pieces. On the other hand, there's a niggling little part that also thinks these knives are incomplete, that they'd be much better with appropriate shields. Perhaps an oval to go with the pearl, a simple bar for the stag, some sort of gimp for the jigged bone cattleman, and a crest for the wooden Sailor's knife.
That is the most amazing lobster I’ve ever seen!!!Sometime no shield is better IMO.
