Maybe. For now I'll be using this one for myself. The Variac was new-old stock from some dusty warehouse circa 1968.

Hey man , it's screwing up your metal and turnin it all purple and stuff :D

Kinda spotty too. I'll have to mix a fresh batch of TSP or break out the H2SO4 and some distilled wasser.:D

HEY!!!

Where did you get that cool digital DC voltage guage???

I am building a couple and that would be a hell of a lot better than scavanging a mulimeter to do the same thing!!

Let me know!!

Good work as usual!!

Alan

That is a Simpson F35 DC Voltmeter. I can't remember where I got that, Alan. I think it was MSC. It was expensive, though. I think around $150. The variable transformer was $45 of of ebay, but Staco makes them still, and they are $168 for the 120v version. The faceplate and the enclosure were made from scrap stuff I had laying around. To make a new one, from all new stuff would run in the neighborhood of $400, but its rock-steady power on this bad boy all the way up to 140 vdc. Talk about sizzle!

Zappowiieee! ;)

That's really neat, Jeff. :D

I like the way you combined everything into one box.

You know, there's probably a market for that. :)

Nice, Jeff!
I've got one something like it.
Used a GR W20MT3A, so I can crank out a bit more than 18A...
The boss was tossing out Variacs, so it's mine...
I did find panel meters a bit less expensive than you paid. The LCD ones are cheap, and I don't like to use them except indoors under constant lighting conditions.
The LED model you have is more useful in a shop environment, as lighting, or lack of lighting, isn't an issue.

can you get green with it?

Yup - light green with TSP.

Going to get me some battery acid tomorrow. Been housebound today... 36 degrees, raining, and just a motorcycle. *sigh* Well I did bundle up and get into town to make a post office office run to send tappers to customers.

I'll let you know if I get better greens with eth acid, Mike.

Maybe, Don. The trouble is that new variacs of around 5-6amps are around $160, and thats almost what you can buy a complete anodizer for from Reactive Metals. This isnt even counting the rest of it. Gosh, I'd have to get like $500 for one of these if you include all the time in it also. I doubt anyone would pay that.

Nothing like a Simpson, Howie. I'd have had a amp-meter also, but I thought the price was out of control on those. :D

Jeff, I use 2 tablespoonfuls of TSP in a gallon of distilled water. I can get any shade of green you want, within 2 ranges of voltage. One around 45v. and the second range around 100v.

No probem with TSP.:)
