Sometimes, it's okay to be outbid...

So, I just lost this auction to a snip...... um, last-second bidder:

8 Imperial knives

Now, $10 per knife is pretty good, but in retrospect, I'm kinda glad I didn't win this. I won a few other auctions this weekend, so the wallet is going be a little light for starters.

(BTW, this is not a rant on sniping)

Glenn:

I think I know what you are saying. Sometimes I might bid 50, but hope I win it for 25, then when the auction edges up towards the 50, I find myself hoping someone goes 51 (sigh of relief).

A benefit of sniping... you can chicken out close to the end if you change your mind. If you had set the bar 2 days earlier, there's no going back.

You can't own 'em all (I keep telling myself!)!

It sure is fun trying though! Seek and aquire is what I enjoy the most when I have the time.

Yeah my wife does the same thing! Only she calls it "shopping" LOL
Aint that the truth brother! I actually have it made in the shade,I have successfuly gotten my wife involved by buying her some knives that she liked. Mostly old Imperials that don't cost much and have fancy fake mother of pearl scales and flashy polished blades. Just got lucky I guess because she is not at all understanding when it comes to buying guns. Matthew

Glenn,
If you look at the bid record, you'll see that tb_buccsfan bid repeatedly until he tied you.
When he bid $80 and you were still the winning bidder with the first $80 bid,he(and everybody else)knew what your bid was.If tb_buccsfan really wanted the knives, you'd have thought he would have bid or sniped at least one increment higher.
I'd check the sellers other completed and current auctions to see if tb_buccsfan bid on any others without winning it.
There are some "rings" of sellers on eBay who bid up each others auctions and if you can determine a pattern like this and report it,they will get a suspension.
The seller of that auction sure didn't give much of a description of the knives, did he? That and "fuzzy" pictures always makes me wary.

If you check the other auction that ended on the same day for the same seller, guess who bid up that auction as well but didn't win it? I'm also leary about a member who's been active on Ebay for 6 months and yet has no feedback.

That's quite interesting, I didn't look too hard into that, but golly, now I feel bad for Tb-Bbuccsfan, 6 months on ebay and hasn't won a single auction...

Is there another way to search to see the auctions he has bid on?

Glenn

I'm not sure how to investigate what auctions he's bid on but can only look into auctions from a seller that aren't more than 30 days old. Coincidence? I think not.

My goodness, the tbbuccsfan is also from GA!!! Probably just a coincidence, but something smells rotten in Denmark, as old Bill Shakespeare used to say... It seems to me that the big auction site is protecting the shill bidders by making it impossible to see what other items they have placed bids on in the past 30 days. Just calling it how I see it, YMMV Cha cha cha/bla bla bla

I can tell you that a couple of times this bidder has bid against me and got left holding the bag.If someone with no feedback jumps in against me I bail.Wonder why there is no feedback.Arnold

It's not like E-Bay minds this one bit...after all, the higher a bid, the more they make. I doubt they would go after a guy like this. It's a shame but just another example of how making a quick buck can make a person do things.

Similar scenario on item 200079228969

Same seller Chatsworth2005. Same bidder driving up the price tb_buccsfan

Can't look much at his items bid history on Chatsworth 2005, he hadn't sold anything since November.

Glenn,
You can check the 30 day bid or sell history by:
1. go to "Advanced search"
2.click on the link on the left "items by bidder"
3. enter the user name and make sure the "completed auctions" box is checked.

For some reason,tb_buccsfan shows nothing in his bid history even though he bid on both of chatsworth2005 auctions.

Suspected shill bidding can be reported here:

http://pages.ebay.com/help/policies/seller-shill-bidding.html

then click on the "report" link about 2/3rds down the page.

I'm sure that ebay has the capability to determine if a bid comes from the same computer that listed the ad,but in most cases it's collusion between two or more seperate members. This can be verified by looking at the complete bid history of both parties.
Sometimes they do it to avoid a high listing fee for setting the starting bid at a high level and to protect the item from selling too cheaply.
Either way,greed is involved,but that's a normal characteristic of today's society.

Ebay will not let you look at what another member is bidding on any more. Anyway I can't do it any more. That kicked in about 30-45 days ago. You can still see what someone won, but not what activity they have with in process auctions.

I have over 800 positives and you would have to say collusion is still very minimal.I have had one case <that I know of> I bid for a laptop for my daughter.I was the highest bidder with over day to go, this moron placed a bid above my bid and immediately retracted his bid stating he bid the wrong amount and then another bid followed immediately by another bidder with "o" history 50 cents below my undisclosed bid which had just been disclosed. The seller was a largish 2nd hand computer sales selling mainly ex Government laptops.I looked back through his current items for sale and these 2 galahs had been bidding on most items he had current and history showed they had missed out on numerous occasions previously but always driving up the prices. I reported them to Ebay and to Ebays crdit both were suspended immediately and the seller had to remove approx 90 current listings all computers immediately.Everyone else that had been bidding on other items must have wondered what was going on as they all just disappeared. Seller reappeared about a week later putting fresh computer listings and under his own name so he must have received a warning. I had told both bidders what I thought of them <hard to imagine I know> and that I had reported them. Also told seller what I thought and he sold the computer to me for the last genuine bid placed by me.
The point of all this is stands out like dog's dates if you go back through their current and completed history's and report them. I wasnt finished with the seller I emailed every completed sale successful bidder that had been run by these 2 galahs and all were unaware and had left glowing feedback for the jerk seller so they in turn were emailing him to tell him they would never do business again. Most emailed me to tell me what action they had taken.
Hell hath no fury like a Larry303 scorned so stand up and report them Ebay will do something if they can see the shill bidding.. The cases outlined above smack of the same practices. Hoo Roo
