Sometimes modifications makes sense: Small "Civilian" from the Harpy

For those of you who might be looking for a smaller version of the Civilian (like myself): I've attempted to modify a G-10 handled Harpy to see what I could achieve. This took me a little less than 1 hour to do, because I did not want to risk stuffing up the Harpy, while keeping the Spyderco look (serrations, sharpening angles, etc...) and quality.

There's still a bit of finishing touches to administer, but here's some photo's to
illustrate my reasoning for this post:

As you can see, I've taken the WHOLE blade somewhat back from its original cutting position (level), in order to be able to shape it into an agressive, Civilian-like curve at the tip. The NICE thing about this modified Harpy is that it has such a thick blade (spine), so lateral blade strength is not a risk at all.

It also lends itself well to utility cutting tasks, although I will NEVER use it in this manner...

It is by NO MEANS a replacement for the Civilian, but it DOES add another dimension to the defensive capabilities of the smaller models in Spyderco's lineup!! And the modifications are QUITE easy to implement...

Personal touches to already EXCELLENT Spyderco models CAN sometimes pay off!

Heyns,

That's a sweet mod to an already great little knife. You may have inspired me. Email me on status of So. African Martriarchs.

Beautiful job Heyns,
I think I like your version
more than the Matriarch.

OK,
just to tell you about a conversation that I had the other night with a friend (and knife GURU). He felt that one should keep (retain) the serrations to the front of such a model (you can see on the photos that I've removed to frontmost set of serrations).

I won't go into details for the reasoning behind this suggestion (NOT politically correct, blah, blah, blah...

), but I guess that it might be attributed to personal preferences and personalised "style of use"...

What do you think? Anyway, it A LOT of fun to modify and "customize" these little gems for your own needs and to your personal taste!

I'm going to effect the same modification on the Merlin, in order to be able to compare the "modified Harpy", "modified Merlin" and the Matriarch, in terms of opening methods, opening speed, cutting power, etc...

I'll also have a look at the "normal" Harpy and Merlin designs, of course...

Heyns:
I like the change!!! The blade may serve in the utility department even more due to the addition of the plain edge-tip! When using my Harpy for utility purposes, I often find the small tip section getting more use in box-opening.

I HAD to respond, after all!!! We're talking about one of my favorite models here (at least until my Matriarchs arrive).

Sorry to be caught napping. Off the air for a few days, and just look at all that's transpired...
