There are many times that you might want to drill a hole in the woods, but you probably kluge together an alternative way of doing the task. Well, i thought of a way to make an ultralight drill that is relatively easy to use and very easy to make. I cut a piece of spring temper piano wire, rounded one end and ground the other end into a very crude simple spade bit. Then I bent it into the shape of a brace drill. Construction took all of 5 minutes start to finish.

The drill:

I made a handle out of a short piece of Carolina hornbeam by bracing it the wrong way and drilling into the handle piece abut 1/4":

In about 40 turns it will go through 3/4" of pine:

I'm tempted to buy a roll of 1/8" music wire now to make a proper-sized one. This one is more than sufficient for making an impromptu fishing pole, making more efficient lashing points for a spear, etc.

I have a similar drill in my kit... 1/8th inch drill bit, stuck into a small hardwood handle with 2 ton epoxy.
