I have never really been good at sharpening knives, but I am trying to learn. What would you all recommend for a newbie whos learning how to sharpen? Thanks all, Brandon

The DMT aligner clamp and a set of bench stones. The aligner clamp will teach you the proper way to follow the curve of the edge and will give you better form when freehanding.

I have heard great things from the aligner, and actually plan on getting one. However, I also wanted to recommend the Spyderco Sharpmaker. It's great for touchups, but not so amazing at reprofiling. It's also very easy to use and portable.

Agreed. I use the clamp with the 6x2 benchstones. Great thing, the clamp is.

For someone new, I would recommend the deluxe kit which includes the coarse, fine, and extra fine stones.

Granite,All good things take some time and effort.Keep trying, don't get frustrated and watch a simple video on sharpening like the one at www.nortonstones.com .In your spare time work at sharpening everything in the house. Then keep us informed on your progress and try to enjoy learning.Good luck.DM

Go to the pawn shop and find a 1x30" belt sander and start playing with it.I paid $20. for mine. You can get belts in every grit and also leather. You could also get a set of paper wheels for your grinder.Start with a butter knife or junk piece of steel and go from there. It's not rocket science. It's not even algebra, thank God.
