i re-profiled my RMD last night, worked up a burr on both sides on 320g diamond then stropped off and test cut some paper, it went thru it like a laser, then same with my 700g stone then onto my 1200g working both sides evenly to avoid a burr, after this it was hair popping, next my hard ark stone, even sharper than before, now i stropped it to get out any imperfections, took 40 strokes to get it perfect, now it wont cut paper tho  its still razor sharp and shaves like no tomorrow but it just wont cut paper at all, i dont get it

nope no wire edge, checked for that by drawing it thru wood, and it wont push cut either, shaves like no tomorrow still

Did almost the same thing today with my Skinny ASH it had to take it back down some grit and then strop again. Now it shaves and cuts paper, who knows what thats all about..

The way it was explained to me, by a respected knifemaker, was that an over polished edge simply slides over smooth surfaces like paper and wont bite in. The micro serrations are what makes a blade bite into a smoother surface.

I thought I would do a real good job on some of my knives and finish them off with some 3000 grit paper and all I did was make them dull. I think 1500 grit is about good enough for a knife. It's not a shaving razor, even though that is a test, I try not to use it as my standard.
