This is an intermediate stage of my redoing my KME sharpening jig.

Just me, but I love the jaws, and hate the angle adjustment. What don't I like about the KME as it comes fromn the factory?

3 things:

1: Stones are too small at 4" long.

2: Rod is too short, and pivot point too close, to move the rod out of the way, as you spin the blade to the other side.

3: Marked angles on the KME are only apx. As you switch knives from one type to another, depending on blade shape and size, angles change. The Angle cube solves that issue.

What don't I like about the Edge Pro Clone?

No jaws. This marriage solves issues with both sharpeners, pulling on the strengths from both.

I love my KME. I got a Pro clone in the mail yesterday to try it out and see if the basic EP design works for me. We'll see. If not, I'd like to try this mod out. I'd want to keep my KME, though. I wonder if they'd sell me just the clamp portion?

That looks interesting, so how well does the combination work between the 2 devices joined together?

I'm not a fan of the counterfeits myself, but even I have to make an exception when they are modded to this level. In my book they stop being counterfeits and start being scrap parts for a project. So honestly I think we should let this one slide for a change and focus more on the mods that have been done.

That looks like a lot of fancy equipment ya got there, but if it works for you good job.

I thought I was high-tech with my extruded HDPE base for my DMT plates lol.

Check out the thread on 3 Sharpener Portable. I may be getting close to the sharpening station I want

Excellent idea. Before I cut the KME jaw frame, what is the lowest (most acute) angle you can you get with the setup?

Makes a guy nervous, sawing the KME into two pieces. lol

The angle is determined by blade size and the jaw you have. Newer models, have a lower profile jaw.

This is about a 1" tall blade, on the inside marks on the clamp jaws. When I would get it down in the 12's, I was rubbing the jaws.

I have the low angle jaws. Ron has said he is coming out with accessories for his product, including smaller jaws for mini pocket knives.

Depends on the knife. A blade with an area from the edge to the spine would get you into the 12's. Butcher knife say.

Before the mod, the guide assembly got into the mix, and limited low angle numbers. Now the only limitation is the jaw.

For single digit angles, an Edge Pro is a better option. Exactly why I bother wanting one.

This would require modifying the jaw tightening nut. It is higher than the jaws. It sometimes is too tall. At 11 or 12, no issues.

If this mod doesn't already have the option, my solution was to have the kme with a hinge at the back and add an elevation screw/bolt to just behind the clamp so that i can raise the front of the KME making it into something like the angle of an edge pro apex or Hapstone like table/platen. You subtract your riser height angle from your angle reader stone angle. Originally i made an extension clamp with a flat end that fit inside the kme jaws the front end has a screw clamp similar to the basic Lansky blade clamp. I decided the forward elevation adjust was the better option for work in general and it handles scandi grinds much better. What you use to mark/measure the degrees for the elevation part is up to you but it could be anything and the angle finder technique used for the Edge pro works the same by reading the riser angle from the blade and then the stone angle and doing the math from there. The knife/blade pivot angle doesn't change enough for most people to even notice and if you use an edge pro it will feel the same.
