My 7yo is REALLY wanting a knife. He is a Cub Scout and thinks that this year he needs one. He lost a tooth yesterday and actually left a note for the tooth fairy asking for a knife. This morning he looked at his tooth fairy loot, a half dollar, 1937 buffalo nickel and pack of sugarless gum and said cool, then mumbled I wish she would have brought a knife.... So what do you think is a good first knife?

My older son got a Boy Scout knife at that age for selling Boy Scout popcorn.

Victorinox Stayglow Yellow Classic SD or Victorinox Hiker

Swiss Army knife was my very first knife. I really liked it.

It depends on the kid really and their maturity level.

My suggestions, if you as a parent feel they are ready for a 'real' knife:

If you want him to be able to show it off and have everyone of the other scouts say "WOW AWESOME!" get a blue or orange Alox SAK Farmer

If you want an heirloom? Maybe a Case Medium Stockman or Seahorse Whittler?

Both will run around the same $50 range I think.

Case also makes a BSA Knife.

it might depend on what the brother got, siblings are always making comparisons with each other. A small opinel might be a safe option, with no strong springs and a locking mechanism.

Age 7, not much strength in the hands, possible problem with loosing it or inappropriate behavior. I'd get him the victronix classic. Can't cut himself too bad with the small knife, the scissors are cool, tweezers are fun, he can put a lanyard on it to not loose it, and it is in no way shape or form a weapon. I've given it to each of my kids and my niece and nephew with no problems. At age 7, my kids wore it around their necks.

My 6yo just started scouts and I gave him a "My First Victorinox" knife on our first campout. Basically a SAK with a rounded tip on the blade so they don't stab something (themselves). The edge is still sharp though and it comes with tweezers, toothpick, and a can opener. He said it was the best day of his life when I gave him that knife. LOL.
