Hello fellow knife knuts......My son is returning to scouts this year as a bear which means he will be learning knife operation and safety....which he already knows BTW ;) and earning his whittling chip.

I would like to ask the forum what/which knife would be a good first knife for my son(he's 9).......where better to ask this question than here??? LOL

if you are going to do a fixed blade a rat izula, and folder a spyderco delica, keeping it simple and easy for him to learn and they make the izula in green and the delica as well.

If he knows how to handle a knife and wont cut himself, get him a knife that will last him forever that he can give to his kids. Get him a buck knife, 110 or 112, or some of the ones that don't lock. I personally love my 110, but it might be too big for him to deal with, which is why I would say a 112 would be good. My first knife was one my grandpa got me at a hardware store, I believe I still have it but the picture is all worn off which is why I'd go with a knife plain knife like the 110.

not shure what brand you would prefer but defenetli a nice folder not a one hander opener. I was a boy scout and now I am a asistent scoutmaster in my troop and as I notised verry well this pass week at summer camp all the boys with the one hander openers were fliping those things open like crazy. Yes I know its fun manny of us do it I included but not in the presence of two or three people in front of you were it can slip of your hand and who knows the consecuense. So as I observed all this at camp I would recomend a traditional boy scout knife for ovious safety reasons may b not the made in china scout knife but similar only better.

Thank you all for your suggestions......I knew I would get some great feedback form this forum! I have a few spyders and a couple kershaws....in fact i have a delica 4 with his name on it once he proves he will take care of it...until then the Sodbuster Jr. is looking mighty attractive :D

does anyone reading own this one??? any comments?

I would say a SAK or basic Leatherman. I think it helps showcase the blade as "just another tool."

An SAK would be good.

So would a trapper or a stockman.

I started my first two kids with an SAK Soldier and a Gerber LST. Its what I'll do with my 6 year old when he comes of age...

I would get him either a buck 110 or 112. After that a SAK. After that a stockman. What knives does he like that you have? maybe get him a smaller/similiar style?

Mora has my vote. It was my first knife. Here is a picture of what my dad got me, I still have it after about 16 or 17 years. It is a laminated steel version.: http://www.ragweedforge.com/s-1.jpg

they also make "scout versions" that have hand guards for kids who are learning -or who have never cut themselves yet and want to be safe: http://www.ragweedforge.com/33.jpg

If you wanted to get him one that is more modern that he may think is cooler looking these might due (only 12.50 and great quality steel and grind): http://www.ragweedforge.com/440all.jpg

a vic would be great too

Victorinox makes several knives with the Boy Scout logo:

So does Camillus, though I don't know where they are made these days and what you might expect in quality:

Case makes some nice ones, too:

My 15 year-old has a one-handed opener that he likes to flip open. His mom hates it. If he was 9 it might be a problem. I started him out with a Victorninox about then and he loved it.

SAK is always a good choice, with steel that's easy to sharpen and dang near rustproof. Trappers can be quite large to start out with, so I'd recommend a small stockman instead.

How about the Kershaw Double Cross. Traditional looking 2 blade liner lock.

Can be had around $40.

If you want something of better steel and a bit larger, get a Spyderco Native. Around the same price too.

Just make sure he learns to close his knife with both hands. No matter what kind of locking mechanism. That's also why a Buck 110 or 112 is a good idea. One handed closing is a skill that is better learned later in knife handling. Even I have errently cut into my thumb while pushing alocking liner down and closing it while have a deep conversation  Don't multi task when using a knife. Either way you go, you'll be amazed what this will do for his self esteem as you are trusting him to carry and use a potentially dangerous tool. This is a step toward manhood.

My Local walmarts are having closeouts on The buck stockman and trapper models, they are getting harder to find but when you do find one they are usually under 10 $, I also found a buck Prince for 12$. any one of these would be a good knife for him to learn on.

Its also hard to go wrong with a Sak farmer or Hiker, it has all the tools he will need as his skills wilderness skills progress without alot of extras he wont need.

While I am a huge fan of the Delica and usually edc a spyderco myself, I think this is a tool for someone with a few years of knife handling under his belt.
