Hey everybody! My son has turned 9 and is ready for his first knife. It will be for camping primarily, and I thought a nice spyder would fit the bill nicely. I don't have a lot of knowlegde about all the different models so I was wondering if anyone here had a suggestion of a specific one that would fit a smaller hand. Thanks for your time!

persistence or tenacious. They are inexpensive and always a good place to start.

freedoom, i just checked those models out and those look exactly like what i was thinking. tenacious has a bit longer blade so i'm thinkin the persistence wins out of those two. Thanks again!

that's is a good suggestion , but it's not a spydie, I guess that's why the OP posted here.

The persistence would be a very good choice, as would the delica, if you wanted to spend a little bit more.

I am considering a Delica as a first knife for when my two boys get older. The back lock takes two hands to close unlike a linerlock. Which can put their fingers in the blade when closing. They are reasonably priced and a refined design that has been around for a while.

Its funny that you mention the Izula, this was the first blade he "fell in love" with LOL. We went camping a few weeks ago and I was showing him how to make a frog sticker and he was really workin the Izula like a champ. I was originally going to give him the Izula and get me a new Izula II when they come out but the wife wanted me to check into something that folds too. What do you guys think is safer to learn basic knife coordination and skills with, a folder or a fixed? Or am I analyzing too much, I've been known to do that LOL.

For a young boy I would go with a Delica as well.
Slimmer in the hand and better to manipulate.

The Tenacious would be a great choice, if he can handle it...

I'd say either a Delica or Tenacious also for a first knife but for camping, I agree ith the earlier post..For Camping Only a Izula...really... it is the best small task knife.....sorry

easier to learn with a fixed blade. no surprises there. no locks to close, no parts to fail, no fingers to get stuck etc.

Given that it's a 9 yo boy, I'd recommend something that is not terribly expensive. Even the most responsible of boys at 9 are likely to lose it, especially if you find he's carrying it daily and spends a lot of time running about outdoors as mine do. I started one of mine with a small CRKT folder (about $15 on sale) after his older brother lost a more expensive Kershaw at the same age. Perhaps something in the Byrd line as an intro to nicer blades without the cost?

1. Byrd Meadlowlark 2 in FRN. Much like a Delica, but won't break the bank and less heartache if lost.
or
2. Honeybee or Grasshopper. Again, won't break the bank. Tie a little lanyard on these to aid in loss prevention.

My .02.

The new Dialex knife would be perfect for your son too, shame it is not out yet.
