Apparently, Sony Walkman- type things will only recharge special Sony rechargeable batteries in the unit. Does anyone know how this can be? I can't find the stupid special batteries, either. Thanks.

I don't know about the Sony; but I have a Panasonic cd player that uses a custom rechargable battery. I found the battery compartment has an extra terminal. This terminal will not contact the negative terminal of a standard Ni-Cd because of the plastic sleeve. I found that by scraping off some of the plastic I was able to make contact with the case (neg terminal) of one of the batteries. The cd player would now charge regular Ni-Cd's. My wife later bought another Panisonic that came with their Ni-Cd's--- one of their batteries isn't completely covered by the plastic covering. Don't know if this helps because of the different manufacturer; but maybe...

My old Sony MZ-R50 uses a Sony "lip-8" Li-ion 3.7V 750mAh rechargeable battery.

Replacement/extra batteries cost a fortune. (about £50 last time I checked!)

I can get hold of them an the local Sony Centre in town or any Retailer that stocks the item should be able to order a battery for it...

Thanks for the replies, I went out today and got a standard recharger and two sets of NiMh type AA batteries. Shame on manufacturers for having proprietary, overpriced batteries.
