Hi.

When waiting for my returnflight at Heathrow Airport Terminal 4 I found a very small Sony Shortwave (+FM+MW+LW) radio, just a little bigger then a normal tape cassette, it's model ICFSW-100.

It looks extremely well equipped with a truckload of possibilities with some that one often finds only in professional short wave radios.

What makes the radio so attractive for me is its size, you could carry it in your shirt pocket.

Does anybody have it and if so how do you rate it, it costs a whopping $240-250 (£149.95) and my current "shortwave" radio that I sometimes take with me cost me only $35 but eats batteries, doesn't allow keying in a frequency, makes listening to shortwave often an aerobic experience moving around the radio/antenna trying to get the best reception and is at least quadruple in size.

Best Scouting wishes from Holland,

Bagheera

Bagheera,
Sorry, but I don't have any info on your inquiry. However,I have some questions for you...email has been sent. Thanks. :D

I've used this radio for years and even though I have a few others - Sangean, Grundig, Sony- this might be my favourite. I have the old model - there's a newer model and I believe both now have been discontinued. Reportedly this radio was designed for Sony's President who wanted a small shortwave with stereo FM and every bell and whistle they could build into it, like synthesized locking tuning, upper and lower sideband, alphanumeric display for 50 presets, dual alarms, world time and incredibly small size. The features are amazing, the sound is great through headphones, good through the speaker [which is obviously small] and the reception of SW is OK. The FM reception is very good. It's pretty good on batteries but this is a very electronic unit and if you do alot of scanning you'll burn batteries. I think it's a great unit, and the price you are quoting is a bargain from the original price. Note however that Sony products usually fail at some point and this one is no exception. I had an extended 5 year warranty and a few months after it expired, my machine died. But I found a little shop across from the head office of Sony Canada that fixed it for about $50 Canadian a couple of years ago and it's been working perfectly ever since. Great radio!

I have the Sony ICF SW-11 and it works great. I picked it up at the Sony store for around $90 Canadian. It is small and you can finely tune it to the station you are trying to receive, and the batteries seem to last forever,(it runs on two AA's), I take it on vacations, camping and deer camp also and you can plug stereo headphones in and it plays in stereo, but the unit only has one speaker. Also Bagheera I wanted to say thanks for the glowrings, I was having trouble with my mail when I received them but I got your email that you received the money. Take care. :)

Do you remember the name and address? I have a ton of electronic gadgets (MANY from Sony) and am always looking for competent and fairly-priced repair work on out-of-warranty items.

I'll try to see if I kept a card. I know I thought at the time I should remember the place, but it was a while back.
