I know that this may have been covered elsewhere here to some extent, but nothing really clear.

So my question is;

1 What can I bring in my "large main" suitcase (not on board luggage).
2 What can I legally carry around the city.
3 How can I carry it
4 Where can’t I carry any knives (entry has metal detectors)

I read about easily opening folders, so what’s my options? Fixed?
Thanks in advance.

i briefly read through the ny laws, and though a bit convoluted, are not very strict. if your hunting you can carry an auto. even balis have been defined by case law as permitted.

as long as you dont show 'intent' in using against another, you should be ok carrying in the state. but you should check municipal laws in the areas you intend to visit.

most tourist sites and sports venues now have detectors, so leave in the car or hotel if you plan to visit indoors, ie museums, stadiums, etc.

im not familiar with rules regarding transport on planes, perhaps someone else here can help.

I was under the impression from some of the threads here that the laws are quite strict in New York City....it is all too confusing, maybe better off not carrying anything except my wallet......

entirely possible, i only read the state sections. muni laws are often more strict. always safe not carrying anything when you're a tourist, however a small sak sure could come in handy.

In NYC as has been stated several times here, you must carry the knife concealed so that no part (including a pocket clip) is visible. The blade must be under 4" in total length. Finally, if it is a lock back, it must not be able to flick open AT ALL ANY WAY ! Of course the stanard, no dagger ( double edge) blade. The law isn't too bad as far as some states that have far more restrictive laws. The main problem is carrying one into many tourist sites. The use of Xray machines and metal detectors has gone beyond control. The sites and buildings that use metal dectors will simple tell you that no weapons are allowed including pocket knives that they consider to be all weapons. They will not hold them for you and they will not let you in with them.

I see you are from Australia. Just remember that Crocadile Dunkee was filmed before the 4" law came into effect. so don't bring a 24" fixed blade and say "now this is a knife" as he did in the movie as that will not be greeted the same way today......lol....enjoy your stay....My company owns several lcations in Times Square and that is a great safe place to visit these days......

Is a lock back in some way considered more dangerous by law enforcement?

And the 4" is actual law?

Thanks for that Tom, I presume that the same rules apply to a fixed bladed knife as well......so, no double edge, must not be seen, under 4" blade, a folder must not open easily....and if I plan to go to certain places, don't bring one.....have I got it about right?

I suggest a swiss army knife or multi-tool.

Fixed blades may be frowned upon by LEOs and private security despite strict reading of statutes.

Enjoy your visit.

Fixed blades are legal but there was one case where it was considered a "dirk".
Applejacks, a lock blade is considered more dangerous for the obivous reason that it is a better stabbing weapon since it locks open. The 4" law is in effect only in NYC and is written in the NYC Admin code.

I am a serious noob. I had no idea that lockblades had that behind it.

What about like a Native? Less than 4", but a lock blade? Legal?

How about a single-edge fixed karambit with a 3.5" long blade,9/32" thick and very mean-looking:D ?I only carry under 4" FB`s,they seem like a good choice in NYC.

In NY we have a don't ask don't tell policy.:D I have never had a problem carrying anything, but then I don't go causing problems and flashing knives around.

The law basically says anything under 4" is fine. No autos, no double edge blades. The locking blade thing might be an issue in many tourist sites that will check. Keep in mind that it is private property and can make any rule they like.

I always (well almost always) have at least a 3.5" - 4" locking folder, sometimes a small fixed blade too. Never had a problem. Went through metal detectors too.

I visited NYC in early December, 2006 and I can tell you that the Natural History Museum, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Guggenheim did not have metal detectors. I carried my smallest knife (a Spyderco Spin) just to be safe and I didn't have any trouble.

OK.....just played with my Kershaw Spec Bump AO changing the pocket clip and I realised that if I were to carry this folder and were searched for some reason and the officer would use the "centrifugal" law, he could quite easily flick this folder open.....However, this folder has a lock on it to lock the blade in the closed position...so, if I were to carry this in the locked condition then the officer could not flick it open unless he found the little screw and moved it to the unlocked position, only then he could flick it open.

So, where would I stand carrying this folder in the "locked" condition?
