Well....my soon to be mother-in-law surprised me with a very thoughtful Christmas present this year. My fondness of knives is well know enough that I actually ask people NOT to buy me knives as they usually give me Frost or fantasy display knives. This advice was ignored and I'm glad it was.

She bought me a Schrade 175 Florist knife in pretty good condition. The knife has pretty good snap and the blade is in pretty good condition. The blade has taken on somewhat of a slight recurve. The scales are in pretty good shape and the only real damage I see is the spacers between the bolsters and the scales but even this isn't too bad. The blade came completely dull...by this I mean almost no bevel at all.....I'll fix that though and put this one in my pocket for a while to see how it carries.

I was of course surprised by this gift and encouraged her to continue buying me knives as she has displayed fine taste.

Congrats. You've obviously chosen your future in-laws well.

I'm having trouble dating this one......anyone help me out?

That's a really nice present to be getting!

They say a woman becomes like her mother...so you can look forward to many years appropriate presents.

I can only hope. My finance was anti-EVERYTHING when we first started dating. Now...almost 5 years later she carries a Byrd Finch in her purse on a loop with a flashlight, Leatherman Micra and whistle. She is coming along nicely. :D

Now if ya can get her a Ruger Blackhawk and a nice 1911 :D

Well my fiance has gotten me my entire collection of CRKT- her mother has given me nothing. But she does appreciate knives and I have even shown her the ones that I am making and she gives me her input. Plus she has given me one of my best knife related compliments- "You are the only one I have met that sharpens knives as good as my father used to!!"

I carry that compliment with pride!
(And sharpen her knives as often as I can as her present)

Actually....she is in her doctorate (PhD) program at Temple which is in a crappy part of Philly. She has good pepper spray but has felt quite uncomfortable a few times walking to her car. We've been looking at some internal hammer S&W J frame .38s. They fit her small hands well and they come out of a purse easy.
I can teach the basics but I'll also get her some profession training on using a pistol for self-defense.

In her words early on..."guns are icky." After her first encounter with some unsavory characters, her views on guns changed rather quickly. It's funny how fear can force a sudden and dramatic shift in opinion.
