So my buddie and I were getting our camp site ready and I picked up his knife. So since I usually throw it with his permission I picked it up and threw it. Well it broke at the tang. So I had to give him my schrade old timer hunting knife.

PS it was a winchester bowie knife

There's a lesson here: don't try throwing knives not designed for throwing. ;)

It's a little odd that it broke at the tang, though. Typically throwing kills the point and not much else. Poor quality?

Beat me to it.

Throwers are usually made of 1055 carbon or such.

Throwing knives are also tempered very soft so they flex instead of break. If you want some knives to throw around the camp check out the Gil Hibben throwers - they're made for tossing around and you can get a set of three for around $30 bucks.

I would never throw the knife which is not mine. And if it was mine id thought twice. Is it expencive/impossible to replace it? Know little about bowies...

That huge "Winchester" bowie-like object that appeared recently in the discount stores? It doesn't surprise me it broke, not at that price....

Well, you're done with that phase of life. . .

The blade on question probably broke because it's not differentially hardened - i.e., not softer through the tang junction in this case, and it's probably necked down with squared shoulders instead of tapering. So it broke at the weakest point.

A sure sign of economical construction and value. Sorry you lost your Schrade old timer, but now you can graduate to a Bark River, or better. And if your buddy, and you, want a better knife next year, you can toss his old timer around and gift him again, helping to improve his choice and give you a reason to get that Busse, Strider, or other field knife you really want.:D
