I really can't explain the fascination, really I can't.

It's like some folks with golf I suppose - you use a stick to get a ball in a hole and they charge you $75 to try.

Knives are like that on the surface - you have a piece of steel that's sharp and pointy.

But there is some other deeper fascination. Something about form, iron, wood, bone, function, ... It's art with natural elements. You admire the skill of the maker and the God that created the parts. You wonder about the many varied forms of steel with all its various -ites.

I have a knife I made sitting on my desk. I just stare at it. I like looking at the swirling grain in the burl. Follow the lines in the bolster. Feel the sharpness of the edge. It's not entirely that I admire my own work. It's kind of a wonder at the whole piece, knowing that it didn't really come from me, hoping it will outlast me.

Every day I look forward to seeing new pictures from other makers on this forum. Stealing some ideas, rejecting others, always admiring the marker and the made.

Then again it's just a piece of steel.

I'm nuts, I say, NUTS

Steve

This thread may get kinda long, because you ain't the only one! :)

We aren't gonna start talking about stone washed balls again are we?:o :D ;) :footinmou

Hey, maybe Dan meant "a little seax". He was thinking about knives after all! :o Personally I try to avoid questions about the size of my seax, however.:D :D :D

Steve,
I used to be like that when I started, way back in the last century. Things have changed and I'm only about 98% like that now. :(
Probably be down to 97% or so by the time I have 40 years as a maker:)

Dan's thinking about putting his knife in it's sheath again?

Steve, I agree fully. I'm hooked as hooked can be. Nothing else rattling around in my head anymore. Just gotta remember to feed the cows. I'll have a couple new pix for ya soon. Just did my first hand rubbed finish and my first handle of Desert Ironwood... sorry "premium grade" Desert Ironwood. Two sepertate knives.
:D

I honestly cannot sleep at night because my feable brain will not shut the hell up. Oh I can do this ooo I can do that. I've got to get shed of this frigging job. Might help if I could actually sell something. Everytime a knife comes together, I get attached to it. Some day I will let go.
