I really can't explain the fascination, really I can't.
It's like some folks with golf I suppose - you use a stick to get a ball in a hole and they charge you $75 to try.
Knives are like that on the surface - you have a piece of steel that's sharp and pointy.
But there is some other deeper fascination. Something about form, iron, wood, bone, function, ... It's art with natural elements. You admire the skill of the maker and the God that created the parts. You wonder about the many varied forms of steel with all its various -ites.
I have a knife I made sitting on my desk. I just stare at it. I like looking at the swirling grain in the burl. Follow the lines in the bolster. Feel the sharpness of the edge. It's not entirely that I admire my own work. It's kind of a wonder at the whole piece, knowing that it didn't really come from me, hoping it will outlast me.
Every day I look forward to seeing new pictures from other makers on this forum. Stealing some ideas, rejecting others, always admiring the marker and the made.
Then again it's just a piece of steel.
I'm nuts, I say, NUTS
