I am looking to get a large sebenza and like the look of the micarta inlays and bead blasted finish but I also really like the satin finish and various wood inlays. If and when I do get a sebenza, i plan on using it. My question is this, what are the pro's and con's of the various finishes? Does one finish hold up to normal wear better? (pocket wear, light scratches, etc..) Thanks in advance!

It's simple... just buy a plain, micarta, wood, and unique graphic and edc all of them!

Just kidding... I think the Micarta holds up best... but YMMV. Even though the polish on the unique graphics get hairline scratches all the time, the polish actually hides them pretty well... much better than the plain. That said, I think a used knife is a loved knife, so the more wear marks the better! Keep in mind CRK can reblast your handles for a minimal charge... so just use it because you can always restore it to its original glory.

Thanks for the reply. That is good to know. I think I am drawn to the micarta. Now to sell some stuff:)

I wondered what one to get for a long time.
I ended up getting the plain jane Large Sebenza 21. I love the dark finish. I also love the wear marks it picks up. I think a worn/used knife is more beautiful than a new/unmarked knife. Plus I know that if and when I decide it's time for a spa treatment all I have to do is send my baby in and I'll have it back soon looking all pretty.

I think that the wear on the plain Jane's looks great:

I am heavily leaning towards the Micarta inlays but these "Worn" plain scale sebenzas do have an appeal. Is the micarta worth $50-60? I guess it is if that is what I want. Will hopefully be able to sell my goods soon enough to get one so I have a few days to decide.

For a first sebenza I recommend a large sebenza 21 with no scales. Get that knife all worn out and lookin cool and then collect the scales...... If you are a collector. I am not so I just buy plain scale sebenzas. I honestly prefer the look of the sebenza without scales. For me simple is better

Good Point. I am getting it to use it. That being said, I think the micarta with the bead blasting is a nice happy medium between the plain scales and the satin with wood inlays.

CRK sand blasts. If you get a micarta I can bead blast it for you. I've done a few.:D

I think the Micarta is nice. But I really enjoy just the simple look and feel of the Plain Jane. It's a wonderful knife no matter what variation you get. I'm glad I picked the plain one as my first.

I have been waffling today between the micarta and plain one... I really like the blue thumb stud and lanyard tube. The simplicity attractive as well. Plus the price is just that much easier to swallow.

One piece of advice - don't let price play any part of your decision. This isn't just a knife, it is a functional luxury item - much like a fine Swiss watch or an expensive bottle of wine. You can cut with a box cutter, you can tell time looking at a Casio from Target and you can get drunk off malt liquor. Don't lie to yourself because you're looking for something much nicer than a cutting tool. You're looking for something that you can appreciate, something to admire and cherish. Considering that, buy the one you want - the one you really want. If you chose the cheaper of the two based on price, every time you look at it and admire it, a part of you will still be lusting after the other. If you're anything like me, that will bug you more and more and you'll eventually end up losing money selling the one you've got to purchase the one you really wanted in the first place.

I don't know who said it or what the original saying was, but the version I tell myself is "buy the one you want and you'll only cry once." Sticker shock is a painful pill to swallow, but I promise that as the years go buy that $50 won't mean nearly as much as the pleasure you get out of owning something you truly appreciate.

Best of luck with your decision.

Good man, bravo! Extremely well put and spot on. Although in my case, I got to wondering how the plain jane felt, so after my first, a Large 21 with Micarta inlays, I traded a knife two times worth that of a plain jane ...for a plain jane.

Either one is nice, but my vote is for the Micarta inlaid version and if you feel like really diving in, get the Insigno ;)
