I have been having trouble getting pics that are useable to show the details in my work for feedback. I am using a Kodak Z650- so not a great camera, but nor a cell phone either. If I use ambient lighting, the pictures are too dark. If I use the flash, the blade washes out. I am using the Macro setting, and the zoom is optical if that helps. Otherwise, basic point and shoot settings.

Examples:

With flash:

First off, there are two sub forums specifically for this stuff on here, the photography and the gallery. Lots o info in there.

Just a couple tips, use fill lighting like adjustable arm desk lamps, clamp lights for the shop, etc. If you don't have th available, use ambient light and refect it onto the blade with white foam board or cardstock. Try backing up and zooming in if you want to try flash. Double the distance and th flash output is cut 4 times. In short, you are getting reflections from the flash due to it being almost right in line with the lens, moving the light source off camera allows you to get around the issue.

In the photography forum, I did a post on how to get respectable shots with very minimal equipment, I used my cell phone, one lamp, and a few sheets of printer paper. Its titled "Ghetto photo shoot" and member ebbtide did a more involved, but very basic one called "30 minute photo challenge." Check those two threads and read around there, it will answer all your questions!

Also, go back and finish sanding that blade!

Thank you. Didn't even think to look for a photography forum. The blade needs a lot of work yet. Its just rough profiled.

I think that the reason the flash picture has the blade exposure so blown out is because it is reflecting the light directly at the camera lens. It's likely that if you either angled the blade so it wasn't reflecting the light from the flash directly back at the camera, or, use an off-camera flash to change the angle of the flash reflection, either one would end up with the blade not so over exposed.
