Sotis or Keating?

I am looking to augment my meager FA stick and empty hand skills with focused blade training. The two avenues that, at this juncture, seem the most open to me are getting training from James Keating or importing Amok! from Prof. Sotis. My first choice would be, both, but time and money may not alow this. I have read bios on both and respect where they are coming from but do see a difference.

I would greatly appreciate any thoughts and especially any first hand observations.

hello! i know both of these gentlemen...
both Keating and Sotis are true professionals, and are both able and excellent teachers, and you could not go wrong with either...

of course, lol... i am a bit biased, and i strongly recommend Tuhon Chris Sayoc of Sayoc Kali...

please check my site for information on Sayoc Kali training in my links section...

good luck with your training... respects, Jeff Chung/NY

you're in Washington state...?? Hell go see JAK..Keating is very cool and hes got a street self defense attitude..
No need to import anyone..
No offense to any other teacher..
Why not go to a Riddle of Steel???
great way to train with JAK and train with the other Riddlers...
learn Steel AND concepts of FMA...

I agree. Based on geography alone, Keating should be your choice. I'm going to make it to this years Riddle as well.

In fact, why not come to Vancouver and train with Bram April 7th & 8th 2001 as well.

Steve

I would think a "focused practice" means having consistent periodic training with someone. Your geography would dictate Keating because he is in that area as well as a lot of other Riddlers.

The other person you didn't mention but also in that area is Datu Kelly Worden. Some of the folks at Riddle seemed to cross over/complement with training from Worden.

Hello,
I agree with the other people posting here. In order to get the maximum out of your training you need consistent training in whichever art/style/instructor you choose. I am lucky to be near Master Sotis and host him at our school regularly. As for Mr Keating, I have many of his training tapes and find them quite good. I suggest you train with Mr Keating, and try to attend seminars and gather information on other styles as often as possible. Tuhon Sayoc is another great addition to your training. I highly! recommend training with him as well.

I second the idea of contacting Datu Worden, especially if you live in the Seattle/Tacoma area. He's got a great teaching demanor, combined w/ a legality-aware mentality and a great sense of humour. I'm going to take up my training w/ him again this spring. Plus, he seems to be instantly able to assess your abilities and will work w/ you from "where you're at" in your development.

Gentlemen,

Thanks for all of your replies. I have scheduled a meeting with Mr. Keating for next week. Prof. Sotis has also given some options for training with one of his people locally.

I have seen a few of Kelly Warden tapes and agree that he has good stuff. He is quite a distance from the homestead, though I hope to be exposed to his style sometime too.

Steve,
I'm very interested in your seminar. I will send you an email.

Ray,
Good advice about training with varying partners. I trained with a one legged man (my cousin) for a long stint several years ago. He was bull strong and had fast hands and a few painful surprises he could pull off with his prosthesis. Ouch!!!!
