Anyone tried opening soup cans with a BM705? I'm probably going to be getting one of these and would really like it to open cans as one of its designated duties :) Think the tip will break?

That's kinda what I was thinking... Either this is another Troll or book smarts waved bye-bye to him long ago.

If you're going to use a BM705 as a can opener, what are you going to do with a can opener?

Don't do it!!! That's abusing a $100 folder, at the very least it will scratch the blade up and worse it would bend/break the tip :(

Sheesh a $.50 P38 would work better...

Out of curiosity I've tried this with most of my knives to see what would happen. You'll most likely wreck the edge slicing through the can, but the tip will be fine. Knives aren't made for cutting cans, do it regularly and you'll ruin any knife, use a can opener instead. In case you want to know, my M2 710 had the entire edge rolled when I stabbed into a tomato juice can and sliced the top off. I wouldn't worry about the tip, even the cheapest 420j2 blade will make it through without losing a tip, the tip just won't be sharp after.

didn't somone have a post on tactical can openers here in BF..in practac funny as hell:p

I used to use a shotgun to open my cans, but I got tired of picking pellets out of my Dinty Moore stew.:D Besides, it made a real mess out of my kitchen and my landlord kept complaining about the noise.:D

Lol, this reminds me of the time I posted that Brutus stabbed Caesar with a balisong. Somebody WILL take you seriously no matter how wild your statement was.;)

I don't think snowblind is a troll-- just new. It's an honest question (I think). Tactical folders are supposed to be tough, and in an emergency situation, you might have to resort to opening a can with a knife.

The only blade that will get significantly damaged from that kind of cutting is one that is dedicated to light use, like a slim hunter which has a really thin point and very acute and slim edge. Most "tactical" knives have edges and tips that are far in excess of what is necessary to cut up a tin can. I had a Benchmade mini-afck for example that would not be bothered by opening up a can of soup. There are of course better tools you could use.

I think he is asking it tongue in cheek to inquire about the strength of the blade. I checked his other 6 posts and he does not seem to be a troll, although that was my initial reaction to the question and the low number of posts this gentleman had next to his name.

I have no firsthand knowledge of 705's and soup cans but I can attest to the fact that a 710 (M2) has absolutely no problems with opening bottles of cold Corona. :D

Come on guys!! I have opened dozens and dozens of cans with my benchmade knives. My favorite is the Benchmade 710. The only thing it will do to your knife is dull the edge and scratch the coating. I don't mind dulling the edge because I usually use the knife as a spoon after I open the can. No I'm not joking, I eat mainly thick stuff like dinty more beef stew so it works good as a shovel.
Of course don't ask me, I cut sod with my knives every day, use them to mix five minute epoxy, scrape lawn mower blades, pry any and everything, so I'm not your average user. I have five axis locks that get regular rotation as beaters. Hope this helps :D

A local maker and friend of the family makes two bladed folders of 440C...one marked 'BEAN' and one marked 'SUPER'. This started after a fishing trip where no one brought a can opener.

The 'BEAN' blade is to open cans and is hardened to RC57-RC58, the 'SUPER' blade is in case you need something sharp!, and is hardened to RC60 or so.

Not a bad system. :)

common guys, the guy wants to open a can with $100 knife, so what?
do we really need to reprimand him for this?
Yes, the blade get scratched, yes, it's better to use a can opener. But, the answer is yes - you can open a can with bm705. Not to mention that you will look a way cooler doing this then a guy opening it with $.50 P38.
After all, could you give me a real life example when sebie is handier then bm710?
just my $.02 (canadian)
