Is there a source for larger than 4" x 1/2" metal matches. In the spirit of bigger is better I thought I'd try two things at the same time. First replace my strike force as a carry fire starter by just a metal match and striker. Also since I would then stuff the strike force in the car/pack and since the thing is so huge anyway I thought it might be interesting to replace what seems to be a 3" long 1/2" rod with something longer say 5" and drill out the top cap to allow the extra rod to extend out the cap.

However I could not find a source for anything near that size in 1/2" dia.

Thanks in advance

Todd

Hi Todd,

Bigger is not better just ask any w...

, no not that I mean "well respected Blade Forum member".

Todd there are a whole lot of BF members who can tell you about the quality of the Swedisch Large Army Firesteel with lanyard and attached metal scraper. It's "only" about 3/8" by 3" (the Ferrocium) but it works always and produces more then enough hot sparks to do the job, especially when you are lucky to have the "extra" Maya-Wood keychain attachement with it

.

Erick Noeldchen makes very nice Firesteel holders that attach to his sheaths and they hold the Firesteel perfectly.

Bagheera's Swedish Firesteel is tops. It works like a charm. I can't imagine one better.

It's not the pace of life that concerns me, It's the sudden stop at the end.

I recommend the metal matches from www.simply-survival.com . I have one of the large ferocium matches and a couple of smaller ones I put in the handle of my Project II and in my daily survival kit. The larger match comes with a metal striker and a length of rawhide to use as a lanyard. The smaller ones do not have a striker but one is easily fashioned from an old hacksaw blade. Good luck with your search and check out these, I think you'll be happy with them.
Keep the hairy side up!

Dave in PA asked about the Swedish Firesteel:

I highly recommend the Army model which is the one I have. I can’t imagine a ferro rod that’s even bigger than this one!

I found a site in Canada that’s running a special- buy one, get one free, for 20 dollars. It doesn’t say if that’s US or Canadian dollars, but is probably Canadian. This is a really good deal. They have a toll free number and say they take credit cards:

http://darlinent.8k.com/

They say to ask about their wholesale price also, if anyone really wants to lay in a supply of them.

Bagheera has sold Firesteels in the past as a fund raiser for the Boy Scouts. He may be out of them at the present time as they don’t last long. He will treat you right if he gets more of them in the future.

hey you guys,
I checked the number in Canada(darlinet)after viewing the above website, and the lady that answered was very resistant to me ordering the Army model. She insisted on the Boy Scout model and when I pressed on for the Army she informed me that she did not know if they could get it but it would be $45 instead of $20. Anybody know anywhere else to try for the Army model?
Phil
