I've been wanting to experiment with clay heat treating in the Japanese style for tantos and Scandinavian style knives, but can't seem to find a source for this medium carbon steel. Any sources?

Silent,
If you are just looking for a nice hamon, or a bold temper line, 1084 gives great results, is readily available, and is a darn good steel. It's not medium carbon but quite tough and versatile.

Here are two of my recently completed knives forged from 1084. These are straight edge quenched rather than clay coated, but at least they will give you an idea of the contrast that can be achieved.

The first is my personal knife. It's a spear point utility knife.

The second is one of two drop point hunters for a customer.

Terry,

You sure do some awfully nice work and have a great web site,
thanks for showing us a couple of you new knives.

Thanks Bill. I'm sort of embarrassed with the website pics. Most of them are older knives that no longer reflect the type of work I do now. Of course, at the time I was proud of them. I will definitely be updating the site in the near future.

Very nice! Thanks Terry, I have some 1084 that I have been using a bit of. I like the way it forges so maybe I'll experiment with some temper lines like you have managed. I remember you describing your process on another forum so I'll have to look it up again.

Thanks for the link Xrayed, I'll check them out.
