Anyone knows a source that sells plates or rect bars ?
Every single source I could find sells only rounds ...

May be 1" wide by 3/8" thick or just a 3/8" thick plate.

Most of the U.S. knife supply companies sell 416 SS rectangular bars for bolsters and guards. They also have matching 416 pin stock.

Google Texas Knifemakers Supply.

If you want plate steel I can put you in touch with one of my industrial metal suppliers.

Hi Don! Also Sir, there is Ann Sheffield at Sheffield Knife Makers Supply 1-800-874-7007

Don - can u let me know the name of the supplier ?

What about 303 grade - that one is easier to machine, due to
sulfur etc. How is it's "solderability" :), if there's such a word ?

And what's the appeal of 416 - it is listed as abrasion resistant etc ?

Mike, do you mean that Sheffield has 416 plate? Not that I need any, but Rashid might.

Rashid, I can't really give you a good answer to your question about 303 stainless.

Yes, 303 solders just fine. One thing is that most makers want their pins to be hidden, and matching 416 pins to 416 guards or bolsters makes hiding the pins very easy.

I've used both 416 and 303 and had no problem other than hiding pins in 303. I didn't really know what alloy the pins were made of.

Industrial metal suppliers to manufacturing facilities will probably carry more 303 than 416.

I have two local steel suppliers here in town. I suggest you check for similar suppliers in your area. Mine would be concerned about quantities and shipping.

Both 303 and 416 are free machining grades and contain sulphur for this . 303 can only be hardened by cold working but 416 can be hardened by heat treating. Both can be soft soldered but make sure you use a flux designed for stainless steel and a solder containing about 95 Sn,5 Ag should be used..Both can be brazed.

303 and 416 can be found at McMaster Carr, http://www.mcmaster.com/

They have bar and rod in 303, I did not see any bar in 416 less than .5 inches thick but they do have rod. I use 303, It works much easier than 416 even though 416 is easy machining, or even 304. I found that thier prices are a bit better but you may place an order with other materials from a knife supply and just add it in. just another option.
