I need several sizes but not large quantities. I want to make about 25 knives to start. I can store some extra stock but I don't want to buy in large qty.
Thanks,
Dan Farr

Trouble with 5160 its impossible to find in the thinner bars.1\8 or 3\16.
Unless your gonna forge it.
Admiral Steel has a good stock. I just ordered about 60 dollars worth of metal. The freight was 40 dollars.Got me bending over that time . Got to find someone closer.
Take Care

TJSmith...You might check out Pacific Steel in Portland...You will save a bundle on shipping...

Saber, you must have a steel supply somewhere near by you on the east coast...Get into the phone book and ask around...Shipping cost can be the most expensive part...

Dan,
You hit my hot button with your steel selections. I'm going to the Batson hammer-in in April and expect to buy some of these steels.
Up to now I've been using coil springs and such for raw materials but now I want some flat stock. My question is on Admiral and other suppliers prices. I don't mind paying a little extra to buy just what I want with no minimums but don't want to pay too much. How much are these steels at the major suppliers?

I'd just check your local yellow pages. You might try surplus metal suppliers as well as general suppliers.

You can get some common steels from Albraco in NYC for $2 to $4 per pound shipped. They had 1095 and A-2 las time I bought. $50 min. order cut for easy shipping.. Nolan Supply in Syracuse has simiar prices. Not sure about shipping cost as there is an outlet near me. They also have 4140 and 8260 for cheap. Somebody recently recommended Burgon in Vermont (800 258 7106) but I haven't tried them yet.

5160 can be obtained from your local suspension shop. A lot of times they have cut ends that they cannot use, and if you find the right guy he might just save them for you.

If you forge you might want to try your local
auto wrecker for VW combi vans. Part of the
steering in these cars are made from 5160.
I dont know if it is the same in the USA but it could be worth a try for you.
Regards
Steve
