I already have a few of the large Swedish military firesteels from Bagheera, what I am looking for is a smaller size one for a mini-kit. I don't like the ultra small 2 inch by eighth inch rods that Hoods Woods sells, they are too small. I am looking for one that is like a quarter inch thick and 3 inches long, preferebly without the plastic handle. Any ideas??

Charles Houtchens in Vancouver, WA carries a multitude of sizes. (360) 695-8561. I've had several excellent dealings with him.

Try the DoneRight Military Match II (http://gotfire.com/firestarters599.html). See my post on them at: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=181801

The magnesium on the 'Military Match II' and the 'Spike' are about 3/8 thick...the 'Sparky' and 'Military Match (I)' are 1/4 inch thick. They are all about 2.5 inches long. I also have the "Big Flint". I carry the Big Flint in my survival pouch, a Military Match II in the handle of my CRK, and I have Sparkys on most of my zipper-pulls. I love 'em all!

RM

Bagheera also can get the scout model firestarter. It's about 3" long with a smaller plastic grip than the large firestarter. Bagheera is a great fellow, and I like to do something for the scouts.

Try the Boy Scout hot spark - about 2" long, small plastic handle, the rod itself is about 1" by 3/16"

cost about $2 at a Boy Scout Supply place

Hi Sesuko,

How are you doing, you're hard to satisfy, the Large Military Firesteels that we just received a new batch off are 3/8" diameter and about 2.3/4" long, this without the plastic thumbpiece, layard, striker.
The Scout model we have (we only have some left!) are 1/8" diameter and 1 5/8" long again without the thumpiece, lanyard, striker

I had one Scout model that had snapped the Ferrocium of just at the thumpiece and yesterday evening I squared it of and drilled a 1/16" hole through one end. WOW you should have seen those hot sparks flying/forming where I drilled it. The sparks were so abundant :D that they lighted a normal piece of pinewood that I used as a base in the dril clamp thingy, no need for scrapes and slivers of the wood it just lighted it.

So I hard fireworks yesterday evening but now I have a nice 1 5/8" long 1/8" diameter flintsteel to attach to my keychain or stuff in a small survival kit.

Sesuko, you can use a hacksaw and cut the ferrocium rod from the thumbpiece of either the Large or Scout model Firesteel if you wish.

Best Scouting wishes from Holland,

Bagheera

The last time I drilled a ferrocerium rod I used a little soapy water to moderate the sparks. You still get some sparks and a little slush, since the rod is basically compressed powder.* I then rinsed and dried the rod to avoid corrosion. Later, I probably rubbed it down with a Tuff-Cloth. The result might not be quite as elegant as the Firesteels, but it left me with a nice, thick, 6" rod for starting fires. :D

*The soapy water was a tip I received from Mike Mlodzik. I recall reading the other and the texture I got when drilling supports this.
