Is there any place that offers firesteels in various sizes and configurations? I thought it might be handy to get several and attach them to the sheaths of all the knives and multi tools that I use regularly. The tubes from cheap ball point pens might make good material to make holders for them.

Or, I could say the Hell with it and get a Bic.:D

That ferrocerium dot com deal is awesome. I'm gonna give it a shot. Anybody done business with them before?

What would be a good size to get? Is bigger better, or doesn't it make much of a difference? Thanks. -Matt-

the bigger rods throw much more sparks, the rods about 1/2 inch are great and can be used to signal, they also last a whole lot longer.

OK. The owner of Ferrocerium dot com got in touch with me today, and helped me figure out how to pay. He's a really great guy, who is doing this part time. He's sent me several messages now, and is even sending me some samples to add to knife sheaths. If you're able to be patient, its a winner IMO.

I'll have more to report when I get the steels. I ordered two of the largest he's got. 10mm x 100 mm. And thats a whopper. I'll be turning a handle for em that matches knives and adding them to sheaths. His price is almost half of what others are charging.

Bueno so far!!

"I'll be turning a handle for em that matches knives and adding them to sheaths." Okay Fiddleback, I am dangerously close to wanting a knife from you anyway, then you add some custom firesteels?! You're killin' me :D

Are ferrocerium rods very hard to drill? I was just wondering cause I have a couple that I got awhile ago tht don't have a handle or hole for a lanyard, and I would at least like to drill a hole in the top of them so I can attach a striker and lanyard to them.

You can't blame me for knowing what a good rig consists of though, can you?  ;) ;) ;) :D

These arrived today. SWEET. The largest one, 10mm x 100 mm is huge. And for under ten bucks, can't be beat!

Fiddleback,

Do they give good sparks? Are they as good as the "real" Swedish firesteels?

Thanks,
CZ

Oh yea. Throwing sparks really well.

Well cool. I may order a couple different sizes from them. Can never seem to have too many firesteels.

A couple of pics of the new steels compared to my ARMY model. The Army model cost me 16 bucks and is a little smaller than these. The new biggies were less than ten dollars.
