Folks, I am looking for an on-line source for India-made machetes, the kind that are sold in Uganda and other parts of East Africa. To give you some idea what I am looking for, here is a link to a distributor in India that lists the machete. The particular style of machete I am interested in is item M251, the fifth item from the left (with the upturned point). I am looking for a U.S. source for this item.

Are there any machete collectors out there? Here is a little background for my interest in this machete pattern. My wife grew up in Uganda. The word for 'machete' in Luganda, the language spoken by the largest tribe in Uganada, is 'jambiya'. Now that is interesting because in North Africa 'jambiya' describes a kind of dagger or short sword with a distinctive upturned point. A google search reveals a lot of hits for this kind of knife. The machete my wife used growing up in rural Uganda is a conventional flat machete blade but had an upturned point. These items were almost always imported from India. Anyway, I am looking for pictures and to buy a sample of this item for my collection. Thank you for your interest.

I've seen the same in Cold Steels catalog. It was called the Panga type machete. I dont know if it was made in India though.
It is not an uncommon style.

Hi Rev. Pete,

That pattern of machete is called a Panga pattern here. English maker Martindale makes one, and Cold Steel import a nice modern looking one.

HTH:D:).

Thank you gentlemen, the name of the style, Panga, helped a lot. The Panga-style machete on the Cold Steel website is the correct item.

I printed out the page from Cold Steel and showed it to my lovely wife. When I told her it is called a "Panga" style machete she said "yes panga is the Swahili word for machete". Sheesh :D.
