Source for Mammoth Ivory?

Look for dead mammoths. There is usually some ivory lying nearby.

Since they took it off ebay, many of the sellers are gone. Check in the Exchange. There is always some there.

Charles Turnage is good, but spotty. Jerry McClure has been getting a bunch also. Mark Knapp is always good, I got some really nice walrus from Brett Mathews from inherit knife and trade email is brettandmira AT netzero.com he's been working with Dan Westlin. It is getting harder and harder to find the really good stuff. If you see some grab it.

Mark Knapp looks to have some of the best there is while Alpha Knife supply has some great pieces also. Charles Turnage does very well in smaller sizes say 3 1/2" and under. Good ivory is expensive even in small sizes. There is a lot of junk ivory being sold in single pieces to be cut into scales by the maker. Most is very poor and therefore over priced. If you need scales 1 1/2" X 4" X 1/4" realize before you buy what size a piece you must have to cut these out of. Frankl

I am wondering the same thing. I talked with Mark Knapp at Blade and he said that the Chinese are buying up as much of the Russian stuff as they can get their hands on. That doesn't really impact him as he gets his stuff locally, but it does impact us because one of the tow major supplies isn't really coming her anymore. The real trick seems to be getting stuff that is big enough for decent sized fixed blades. mark had some pretty large pieces of interior mammoth ivory at Blade in addition to the regular bark and walrus, but i didn't have the cash to buy any of it. Regretting that now.

On the reference to Jerry McClure , the ivory he has been selling at the shows is some of the best matched material you will ever find. A lot of places may have one good piece with a so so but Jerrys is almost perfect.

As to the remark about the Chinese I know they are even having a hard time getting Ivory out of Russia now and resently bought a very large amount out of Canada because of this. So they are moving closer to Alaska and would not be suprized if they are buy there soon.I know im getting worrid. Also Frank I sell almost all my ivory in large pieces that are all very high quality. To each his own I guess.

From a source who has bought mammoth in Russia for many years....the Russian mafia figured there was money to be made here and they have absolutely corrupted the entire system....payoffs, exhorbitant pricing, ripoffs, etc. Hard to do biz like that. It is just going to get more and more expensive, I believe.
