A while back there was a thread which contained quite a bit of good info on steeling knives. Could someone reccommend a dealer for sharpening steels. I am particularly interested in a small, portable unit as well as a longer "bench" model (around 10" long).

Any help or suggestions regarding improvised methods would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I can also attest to Razor Edge's steels. Their website is www.razoredgesystems.com. I bought a deluxe kit from them and wouldn't know what to do without it. Sharpmakers are great for maintaining an edge, but if you need to remove steel, Razor Edge's stones come out.

I use the steel regularly and the small one is very handy. One day, I'll get around to ordering the larger one for the kitchen.

Just purchased an F. Dick steel (12", smooth oval) from www.knifemerchant.com. I read on the forum that F. Dick was pretty much the Mercedes of steels. (What a name to be tagged with!)

So far, I'd say it's true. This is a great steel. I just use it to straighten the burr though, not to really sharpen. For that, I use an Edge Pro Professional model - a great investment.
