Hi folks,

I am contemplating, after reading all the input from you folks, on buying a KMG-10 grinder. My question now is does, anyone know of a good place to buy a 1.5 (or 2) variable speed AC motor and a controller- cheap or cheaper? I would really like to have the variable speed setup with the KMG but would like to avoid spending the $675.00 if at all possible.

Many thanks for all the help!

http://www.dealerselectric.com/ has a several 220v packages that are way below that in price. ( I think Mike posted this link sometime back.)

Dan bought his motor and controller from Surplus Center but it looks like they're discontinued. Chances are SC still has something similar for a similar price. I bought a 2HP dc motor from American Science and Surplus for $50 - several of those motors are in use among our fellows. I found a contoller on eBay - which didn't work. Roger Linger fixed it for me, or I'd have been SOL. Steve Sando has done a couple of good threads on this subject, and there are others.

Failing the variable speed (which I think is virtually necessary) you can use step pulleys to adjust drive speed somewhat. I'm sure Rob can provide what's needed in that arena too.

BTW For all you people that think I'm crazy for using a surplus treadmill motor:

It's now been in service for a year and a half........

i say search ebay..... i found some really nice motors on there. AC motor from leeson. really nice dependable motors, same models that rob frink sells for the KMG. but the prices are under 100 bucks. i think i got a DC motor for $70 with shipping. brand new leeson 1HP in the box.... search for "leeson" on ebay and you'll see what i'm talking about. good luck!

Okie dokie, Folks.

Many thanks for the suggestions. I'll hit ebay to see what's out there.
