Apart from Rob Simonich, where else can a person get Talonite? Looking for small quantities. Planning to try making a couple of small neck knives. Plans so far call for 1/8"-3/16" thick, about 1.5" wide, 6"-7" long, 2 pieces.

Thanks in advance.

In the quantities that knifemakers need/want, Rob Simonich is the one to contact. I realize that this is not what you wanted to hear but in the US, Rob is the one. Quite possibly you may be able to find a supplier in "your neck of the woods" but expect to pay a premium for it.

Guess I knew all along that that would be the one and only answer. I've been searching quite a bit in the various forums and archives and still haven't found anything.

As for my neck of the woods, the custom makers are still pretty proud of their 440C productions. Haven't found one yet who uses ATS-34, even though that is supplied by a local Perth knife supplies house (Australasian Knife Collecters (AKC) for you out of town folks). Yep... so steels available are very basic. No "exotic" stuff like ATS-55, 440V, 420V, BG-42, VG-10 (I don't think local heat-treaters know how to heat-treat those steels anyways) and definitely no Talonite.

David Boye 800-853-1617 has had produced and is selling cast dendritic cobalt bar stock in
sizes only in 1/8 and 3/16 by 1-1/4 by 10" A close comparison in make up with talonite I don't know but it is a remarkable material for edge holding!!! It is expensive (twice his listed price here in Canada) but what a wonderfull material for great edge holding-my simple tests show about 6 times that of Ats-34 pr0operly heat treated and given the cyogenic quench. It too does not require heat treating and is so very easy to sharpen when finally needed. It does not seem to take a very good high polish finish but requires hand finishing. Perhaps this might be another alternate material to consider

First off, comming soon is http://www.talonite.com Tom Walz and I are starting this new web site to improve customer srevice.

The Boye dendritic cobalt is almost exactly the same alloy, the difference is that the Boye stuff is cast, and talonite is hot rolled and age hardened. Also there is Stellite, the grandaddy of them all.

Cobalt Rules!

one of the reasons theres no talonite left is cause rob doesnt bother to tape the ends of the boxes closed and it all falls out!

Neil, the boat should dock on the 14th, no kidding! Then clear US Customs, etc. Hopefully this will be the only time we have a shortage of 1/8" stock!

Tom, it is the liberal democrats in Hawaii that actually took a sample of Talonite for testing to see if iyt is PC! Didnt Hawaii go to Gore????
