Recommendation? Sourcing Brass for Guard Stock?

Hello everyone, I’ll soon be tackling my first hidden tang and I’ve been struggling to find brass stock online that would meet the size parameters of a standard guard.

I’m not looking for anything huge by any stretch, it’ll most likely be an average sized hunting knife with a simple guard.

Any recommendations for a suggested stock thickness as well as where to source it (United States)?

Thanks!

Just do a quick google search for "brass bar stock" and you'll find plenty of places selling it. I'm sure most of the knife making supplier sell it as well, but it might be a bit more expensive than buying from other places, such as ebay, amazon, etc. The size and thickness depends on what style guard you are wanting to make, whether it be a flat guard, a stacked (with brass, spacers, leather, wood etc.- Scagel style) and then sculpted guard, or purely a sculpted guard. I think anywhere from 1/8" to 1/2" would be fine depending on the style guard you want. Not that it matters, but I personally like the look of thicker, sculpted guards that are from 3/8" to 1/2".

Here is a link to some various sizes that you can get multiple guards from: https://www.amazon.com/s?k=brass+bar+stock&rh=n:6469696011&ref=nb_sb_noss

Here is a link to Jantz bar stock: https://www.knifemaking.com/category-s/1617.htm

Just look around a bit till you find a price and size you like.

Agree with cold steel but metal supermarkets will have some if you want a storefront. I buy bolster material in 3 ft lengths.
