Check out post 22 in the timeline thread...... One piece knife (dagger)

http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/s...ves-Knives-History-Timeline-To-Date-!!!/page2

Cool knife! One of 25 I believe....... I have one of the 4" versions. It could even be a one off because its so early. If you email or write a letter to CR knives they will give you any info they have. Anne has always been very helpful with my enquires. Looking at the knurling pattern on yours I suspect its made in D2.

That is a very nice OPK dagger, they were always hard to come by and are a rare sight indeed these days. :)

When you do get a reply, let us all know the inside track on this one!

I certainly do not mean to question your memory but are you sure that you purchased it as early as '83?
I believe that this one was made in the later '80s (88+) but I could be wrong. Did you purchase it directly from Chris? If not where?

it was the early 80s but it was 30 plus years ago so iam not sure of the dates . i bought it somewhere in jo burg couldnt tell you where.i look at my records and maybe something will turn up . thanks all of you for the intrest and info.

so i got some info from anne

Please accept my apologies for such a late reply - we were out of town for a couple of weeks and I am so far behind with everything.

The knife you show was simply called 7" Dagger - nothing very exotic! We made only 25 in each blade length that we offered at that time - 4", 7" and 9". It is quite valuable now! It was made over 25 years ago, it was a very limited edition and, since we stopped offering the One Piece Range of knives, their values have sky rocketed.

Be sure to let me know if you have further questions -
Best wishes
Anne

so it seems i have something quite rare and interesting

Looking at this knife again there appear to be a couple of anomalies.... Am I right in thinking that the line where the handle joins the blade is straight? If you look at my pic it has a curve as do nearly all the one piece knives. The only one I've ever seen a picture was this one of Dave Fooj below....... in post 32 of the link below he states it was one of the first 80 made..... As I mentioned before the gnurling pattern looked more like the effect I've seen on D2 knives again tying in with the very early 80's date you initially thought. If it is straight I would reply to Anne and ask for her & Chris's thoughts on that!

Edit.
Another thought and one that could probably be answered by Steven65 is the sheath. The original post show a John Leth looking sheath, did the Black Jack
marketed Daggers come in that style of sheath, as mine admittedly a 4" version is very different? Were all the daggers sold through B-J?

thanks nick . yep its straight and the blade starts much sooner from the handel than other reeves i have seen i think thats why there is no (made in south africa) stamp on this one ,no room for it.i also have no number stamp. yours does , so i wonder if its part of a 25 piece run.anyway is there a test for d2? short of holding it to a grinder to see the sparks it throws off? ialso have a 4inch clip point made in s. africa no saw teeth on the spine that i bought at abought the same time. i believe it was called a chute knife, i bought it at a gun show here in switzerland. this one i used alot its been all over the world with me and has never let me down and is now in my get home bag and gos with me every day.

The "Made in South Africa" stamp was only used in late '87 early '88 for knives shipped to the US. It was a requirement of US customs. Before that none of them had the mark.

The other knife you own is probably an early Mountaineer. Does it have a long clip or a short one? (long clip was the earlier model)

Break out the camera lets have a look at that one too! Don't be shy.

My reasoning for the D2 comment is simply all the knives I've seen that have a shallower less coarse gnurling have been listed as D2. I do have a 1986/87 that has the more normal looking gnurling, and I've seen plenty of others.

I'll post some pics of the difference when I get a minute.

Still curious about that flat transition line into the blade, to me it says its an early blank at least......

ok heres the pair.the uneven finsh on the dagger is just that , its not a result of neglect or rust , it was allways like that

I can't speak about the Dagger, but I am almost 100% sure that the Mountaineer is D2. It is one of the later ones when Chris refined the design and used a slightly shorter clip.

thanks Steven, given the isues that i have with rust with this knife i think its safe to say your right. if i go a month without oiling her rust will start, the dagger has a spot of rust on the point too but it has never seen use, nevertheless i keep her wiped down

well i still dont know what i have here. maybe one of 25 or maybe a 1 off? iam trying to get a idea of its resale value. anyone here give me a guess?

I think is one of the 25, value? difficult to say I will put in the range beetwen 800 - 1000$
