Southard lockbar question

I don't have the post handy but the lock bar is heat-treated.

Brad himself confirmed it, right? I think it is in the original thread when they started being delivered, died off a while ago.

Yes. I just don't remember whether it's here or on Spyderco's home forum.

I remembered it from Spyderco Forums :D

It is not carbidized, it is however heat hardened at the lockface, Just like the Chris Reeves Sebenza, or the Spyderco Techno. An excellent way to prevent wear.

I think you will be pleasantly suprised.

I was just going to say, the Techno I have has a visible color difference on the lock bar. It looks brown to me. It's probably the same for the Southard. I've had the Techno for about a month now and the lock bar hasn't moved over at all, so this treatment seems to work.

I believe all the Taiwan-made Spyderco titanium framelock that don't have a steel insert are heat treated. (Southard, Techno, Chokwe, Sage 2) I have opened/closed my Chokwe more than any other knife I have or have had (About 1500 times) and the lockup still sits at 50 percent. It's awesome.

Yeah Seelow, my Techno seems to be heat treated/carburized also. The locking surface on the tang shows a wear mark. XHP steel is pretty hard stuff to be disturbed by untreated Ti.

I notice that discolor on the lockface as well.

Hmm, yeah -- my Chokwe hasn't been hit with much flicking, but I have opened/closed it quite a bit. My lockup is still nice and early, so I wouldn't be surprised if the lock face is heat treated.

I hope the OP doesn't mind my related piggy-back. I'd like to know what that little donut of G10 around the pivot bushing is for? Rather, does it serve any purpose other then decorative?

If you mean the piece on the lock side of the frame, there is this on the Spyderco page listing it as an overtravel stop:

". . . and features a small inlaid G-10 panel that acts as an overtravel stop when releasing the lock mechanism."

It keeps you from overextending the lock bar when unlocking the knife.
