Had some time today so I got some more work done on the Bowie. Had a little extra material so I am making a Push Dagger and a small blade that will fit into a piece of deer antler I have.

The three knives to date, about 4 hours into them. The Bowie is taken to 60 grit on a 10 inch wheel and really just roughed out. The smaller ones are now through 180 grit and ground on a 6 inch wheel .It gets harder as the wheels get smaller. 6 inch is about the smallest I can comfortably grind on and maintain control. I have a 3 inch.......sometime in the future. Wenge will go on the bowie, Antique White Micarta on the push knife antler on the small one.

Comments?????

Wenge on the Bowie. Antique white Micarta on the Push knife and antler on the small blade.

Flats are taken to 450 grit the edge bevel and false upper to 1200 grit. Next, file work on the spine more polishing then into the furnace for heat treating. Total time into the three knife blades about 8 hours.

Got some more work done today. Polished the blades with Tripoli and green rouge. Now you might wonder why I polish them before heat treating. Good reason for that....They will be "soaking at about 2000 degrees for a bit and blade steel oxidizes at that temperature. The oxidation is very hard ..difficult to remove. On a polished surface it is quite i bit easier. Any way here are a few more pictures of the Bowie project.

You can see the reflection of the grass in the hollow ground edge.

File work is now done to the steel, Blade and Thorns pattern, then polished again. Pictures really don't show it off that well. Into the double wrapped stainless envelopes and into the furnace for heat treating tomorrow.

Comments always welcome.

Heat treating is done the blade should now be at a Rockwell hardness of 60. Oxygen got through to the small blade past the envelope seals that's why it is black. Could be worse it could have been one of the bigger ones. Tomorrow polishing then handle work if I get some time. Total time into the 3 knives about 10 hours.

Got some more work done today. Re-polish after the heat treat and now the Wenge scales are in place and pined. Next they have to be shaped. Also I finished up a 5.5 inch chef's knife for my wife. 154-cm with Black paper Micarta scales. Its twin and matching paring knife should be ready tomorrow or Thursday. They will go up for sale in the Kitchen knife section.

Two of the knives I am working on. Now 95% finished just need to smooth out some of the transitions on the steel and a final polish. Then the all important edge. The Bowie is spoken for the Push knife will be available. If you are interested get in touch with me It will come with a Kydex fast release belt sheath.

Finish 2 of the 3 knives I started in this thread. The Bowie is already spoken for. The push knife is available. Overall it is 5 inches long the rest of the info on it you can get above. The sheath is one of my own design. Worn between the belt and pants, the front of it is open the pressure of the belt and the nature of the Kydex keeps it closed. The knife comes out of it effortlessly and very fast. If interested email me through the form. Thanks for watching the tread. I almost forgot I have something special in mind for that third little blade I started at the beginning. Something I have not tried before.

thanks for looking and comments are always appreciated. Ken

Finished the small blade. A Snake in the Grass. A little over 2.5 inches long in front of the bolster. Made from 3/16ths 154-CM hardened to a Rockwell of 60. Vine and Thorns pattern on the spine. Deer antler with a black stain introduced. Brass bolster and into the realm of SCARY Sharp. Takes the hair off my arm with no pressure at all...clean shave. Overall length is 9 inches. No sheath with this one you get to be creative and make your own. If you are interested email me through the site.
