Hello friends I need your suggestions, I'll be driving from Los Angeles, CA to Durango, Colorado. For those of you who are locals or if you're familiar with that drive please- please chime in! I'll be taking the 89N- US160-to the CO-140, I'll be driving through Flagstaff, AZ, Tuba City, AZ, Kayenta AZ, Teec Nos Pos AZ, Cortez CO, Mancos Co, and finally to Hesperus and Durango CO. It's a 780 mile drive approximately and my main concern is the weather, according to weather.com there should be no issues of snow in AZ throughout my travels but CO may have weather advisories. So what do you guys think if I need to be present for row call in Hesperus CO at 1000 hours on the Monday the 12th of March, I should leave Los Angeles, CA on Saturday the 10th? I know I can drive I'm thinking heck I'll just leave home Sunday at 0300-0400? Or play it safe and leave saturday? Please chime in folks. Also please mention places to stop or possible sleep or better camp!

I will^, drivebytrucker how is that drive? I would imagine it very twisty and steep?

I did that trip in the other direction just a few months ago. Stopped in Flag for a couple days to visit family. From L.A. to flag is 6-8 hours depending on traffic and how you drive. It's not a bad drive, but it gets steep once you cross the Colorado. Once you get to Flag the ride north is nice. They haven't had much snow this year so it should be good. Going across the rez you're going to want to make sure you have enough gas to get all the way. There's minimal services on that route. Traffic can get slow if there's tourists, but probably not this time of year. It's cool/cold and windy. No real mountain until you start into Cortez. That's not going to be a road you want to drive at night if you've never been there and are looking for something. It can get slick real quick. You're looking at one long day of driving. If you have the time I'd consider stopping in Flag for the night.

Thank you for the suggestions, I'm taking it to heart I'll be giving myself a full 48 hours for this 780 mile drive. I'll probably bring an extra 10 gallons of gas and keep it topped off.

You shouldn't need extra gas. Gas will be cost about 0.40 a gallon less once you cross into Arizona and fill up at the Pilot/Loves ex9 off the I40. Fill up there on the way back too. Flagstaff is around ex195 and you have Williams around ex160. So you'll be just fine on fuel on the Interstate. But you must fill up in Flagstaff. Even if you have 3/4 of a tank, fill up, and eat something good. I recommend Black Barts Steak house for dinner exit 196 (Read the sign) hang a right, across the street from the Little America Hotel/Travel center. Cracker Barrel is the same exit. If you like American food at Knotts Berry farms chicken dinner restaurant, you'll like either place. At Black Barts they sing and dance for you. I think it's one of the best restaurants in America. You could cruise through Laughlin NV and not add extra miles. There is a great observatory in Flagstaff. At any time at night along your journey, you could stop to watch the stars and stretch your legs. Once you leave Flagstaff, you won't see but a few cars all the way to Durango.
