Southern grind spider monkey with a weak detent

I just bought a spider monkey and was very surprised to find that I can flip it open with just my wrist, like you can with most benchmades. I have never had a liner lock that was this weak, is this normal or did I get a defective one? I’m talking very weak, like it barely stays closed and wants to open when I think about it. I’m not comfortable carrying it because I’m worried it’ll open in my pocket. Never had a knife like this before and I’m a little disappointed.

Why don't you contact the company, explain the situation and see what they say?

They have an excellent warranty, I would contact them about that.

I have several Spider Monkeys, their detents are lighter than linerlock flippers that I have, but none are that weak. I would call yours defective. The detent should be about comparable to the Ontario RAT's.

Mine had a very light detent... not that I would call defective, but very light. Opened when I pulled it from my pocket once.

I'd say yours is defective, and if not, at least in need of some attention.

I concur with calling Southern Grind. They're great folk and should get you fixed up.

Agree with the consensus. Contact SG.
Dollars-to-doughnuts they make it right for you.
I love my SpiderMonkey. Detent is perfect on mine.

My previous two were very light. Not to the extent of which you've described yours but still lighter than I preferred.

I contacted southern grind and the knife is on its way to them, very quick response on their part. Those of you who said they were light, could you open them without using the studs?

I could shake the blades out of the handles when closed but not to fully locked open.

My Bad Monkey is much lighter than the SM, I can wrist shake either out. I agree, relatively light detents but I think the SM is about perfect for me, it closes on the detent nicely and stays shut. Not an issue at all, the BM on the other hand w/the heavier blade was too light IMO. I put more tension on it, it's decent now but honestly that one is usually carried in a bag or pack.

A bigger issue for me is the dang spanner screws and the silly little wrench you get. The spanner 'pins' break off pretty easy and they mar up the screws. I've recently replaced all of them w/T6 Ti screws, much better. Found on-line pretty easily.

The Spider Monkey is one of my favorite knives, but those damn screws drive me crazy.

Opened when I pulled it from my pocket once.

The little hump where the jimping is on the Spider Monkey is supposed to catch the pocket, like an Emerson wave, without the hook. That might have happened to you.

Got it back today, guess this is just how they are because it isn’t any different. I can still open it and have it lock without touching the thumb studs. Not sure I will be keeping it or not, it’s nice other than the decent but I guess it’s no worse than my axis lock knives.

So is there no way to tighten the detent? It’s a little better but I’m pretty sure it’s just the pivot tightened.

The pivot tension doesn't effect detent strength. OP would just be making the knife harder to open in general. If they want a quick fix for more detent, then they can take the knife apart and give themselves more lock bar tension.
