Hello all. This will be a short post with initial impressions of the Southern Grind Spider Monkey. I saw one of these at a show on Sunday and was intrigued. I contacted Southern Grind on Monday asking about the knife and inquiring about availability. I am a Soldier and am about to go out to the field for about a month and trying to decide which knife to take with me.
Customer service returned my email quickly and my order was placed Monday morning. Well, the knife delivered today!!! (Southern Grind is located about 4 hours from me).
The knife is excellent. My shoddy pictures do not do it justice. Fit and finish is top notch, it locks up early and deploys smoothly. It is perfectly centered with no side to side play and the grind looks perfect. Oh yeah and it also cuts well! Shaving sharp out of the box. I posted a few photos of a few of my other knives for size reference.
I have several carbon fiber handled knives and the finish of Southern Grind's carbon fiber is nicer than any of my others (from the factory). I also like that the knife is super light. I'm not a fan of pocket clips, but I like that this one is very minimalistic.
I have not used this knife yet in an edc role (just got it today obviously) but I can tell you that my initial impression is that the Spider Monkey is a winner!!! I normally cycle between a sebenzas, custom BM mini griptilian, BM Osborne 940-1, or a spyderco techno. This knife will definitely have a spot in the rotation and I plan to take it to ft Polk LA for a month and use it outdoors as my primary edc. I will report how it does when I get back. Cheers!
