Hey all,

Saw on Facebook and elsewhere on the web that Southern Grind is about to release a new folder. This one should address some of the previous concerns, namely size and blade steel. The new folder appears to be much like the Bad Monkey, but has a 3.25" blade and, ready for this.....S35VN steel.

This one should be pretty cool, I cant wait to see the final product. They also stated that they would have a few more surprises coming soon. I am a big fan of this company so hopefully this one will be a hit. If they can keep the price reasonable, I am sure it will.

Thoughts or opinions welcome.

Other than the usual blade steel marketing, there was nothing wrong with the old model.

I agree, I am a fan of the Bad Monkey, but others either were not, or wouldn't try it due to the steel.

Are we going to pretend that charging a premium price and using budget materials is not worthy of criticism? I can get a 0620CF for the price of a "Bad Monkey" and get better fit, finish, and materials. Gerber knives have pretty alright fit and finish, but I'll get a Kershaw every time because they're often in the same price range and Kershaw uses better materials.

"It's about time" is the proper response, not "looks like they caved to the whiners". The whiners had a valid point, and, if they hold to that same price range, still do.

I could go on a whole anti-curmudgeon rant, but then I'd be at risk of hypocrisy. Suffice to say, blade steel is important because it's the part of the cutting tool that does the cutting.

Pricing isnt soley based on materials. People didnt like the knife because of some perceived issue with the steel used. It's the usual pervasive mindset of the Steel of The Week.

Comparing my 0620 to my bad monkey, and I see no quality differences, other than the crooked grinds on my 0620'stickmout a bit more.

The thing I'm happiest to see is a higher grind than the Bad Monkey. I like mine, but the grind is a little thick. Hopefully they'll offer the Bad Monkey with a higher grind and S35VN in the future as well. It will be interesting to see what these go for. I got my Bad Monkey secondhand and think it was worth what I paid, but I don't think it's worth the price new ones go for. A higher grind and better steel for a similar price might be enough to get me to buy another one, especially if I can find another lefty version.

I like the bad monkey, and if they start building the bad monkeys out of better steel without raising the price to something crazy, I'll buy one.

I have been thinking Spyderco Military or ZT 0200 for a beefy hard use folder. The bad monkey is a little more money, but it has a lot of great features.

If they decide to drop the price $50-$75 dollars in addition to the use of s35v I would be all over this, but I really don't see that happening. There's just too many knives in that price range from companies whose products I've come to trust with more percieved value.
