I'm taking what is looking more and more like a two day trip, on July 9th, to southern Maryland. I am traveling from the MD/PA line to Point Lookout state park, http://dnr2.maryland.gov/publiclands/Pages/southern/pointlookout.aspx, at the "bottom" of southern MD. I've spent a lot of time on the eastern shore, central Maryland and parts of western MD. I've never been to the southern part of Maryland, although that's where a large portion of my mothers side of the family comes from. I also plan on visiting Calvert Cliffs state park, http://dnr2.maryland.gov/publiclands/Pages/southern/calvertcliffs.aspx, which has a good hike from the parking lot to the Bay/cliffs. I plan on getting a little fishing in. I also plan on stopping in Chesapeake Beach for breakfast or lunch, and would like to get dinner somewhere on the lower shore. Can anyone recommend any other parks or museums to check out? I am going to visit a few lighthouses.

Basically, if you can recommend good food, good trails and good views, please share them here.

I'm also looking for any events etc down there. I'm guessing any gun shows are going to be closer to DC or Annapolis, but boat shows etc, marinas to visit.

Wouldn't mind trading gear for a jon boat ;)...

We used to go there for labor day weekends .catch Blue Crabs one day and Bluefish the second day ,staying in CB at friends . One interesting thing - that area was under water at one time and was the birthing area for whales . That attracted sharks ! Each winter the storms wear down some of the cliffs , so you can find fossilized sharks teeth along the shore .Still have some from the early days ! Haven't been there for a long time so I don't know the changes.

Calvert cliffs is a nice hike, but I gotta say, the wildlife you see along the sometimes busy trail is more interesting than the cliffs IMO. The cliff side was barricaded the last few times I went because of dangerous erosion, and that was where the fossil collecting was once great. I think its still worth it to have some lunch on the beach before going back.

Might be too far for you, but The Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum in St Michaels is definitely worth a trip, but you just missed the classic boat show. Even further East on 50 is Blackwater Refuge, but I don't know if they have walking trails, only been on the water trails in kayak

Aaron, I will be in OC for the first week of August, and I intent on visiting Blackwater. I have heard that you will donate blood like Assateague though.

Summer in the the marshes of the Eastern shore, mosquitos are as inevitable as the sunrise. I think Deet just pisses them off

The Calvert marine museum has some pretty cool interactive stuff. Haven't been in a few years, but my daughter loved it when we took her a couple years ago.

Calvert cliffs is okay. Not sure how much further the drive would be, but I prefer flag ponds nature park. Make sure you have bug repellent, the flies can be brutal. Also, I would check on the jellyfish before going in the water. Sometimes of year they are everywhere! Such a nuisance... I like combing the beaches at both parks for shark teeth. Many times (especially after a storm) I've collected almost a hundred in one afternoon.
