Southfork...terrible blade grind!

Hi all,

So I ordered a Spydie Southfork t'other day. I was super-stoked while I waited for it, and was literally DROOLING over Ankerson's review posted on here a couple of years ago. SO MUCH SLICED UP MANILLA ROPE!!!

Well, I was super-stoked, but that changed fast. I excitedly removed it from its box, but then noticed that the blade grind was absolutely horrible! #DEVASTED!!

Before you ask, sorry, no pics! I literally sent it back the same day (yesterday) and was so inconsolable I didn't think to take pics. Basically, the blade was under-ground on one side, and then cut in near the tip so sloppily that it looked like the tip was bent (that is, one side was curved normally, while the other one was straight until 2 centimetres from the tip, giving the optical illusion that the tip was bent). I ordered it from Heinnie Haynes (great company by the way, best place to buy knives in the UK), so naturally I sent it straight back. They were as surprised as I was, and have swiftly exchanged it for another one, which hopefully will be ground properly.

I love Spyderco, and didn't expect this at all - my other Spydies (a Squeak and a Para 2) are utterly perfect masterpieces in every way, which makes this Southfork business all the harder to swallow. I will definitely post pics of the replacement (should be here Friday). I have faith that all will be well, but if THIS ONE has a dodgy grind then, well...I'm not sure what to think.

The grind on mine is very good. The edge is perfectly centered and it arrived very sharp.

I am surprised considering the high quality fit & finish that I have experienced from Taiwan Spydercos. Glad they are replacing it. I have visited the Heinnie Haynes site before researching gear and was impressed by the selection of goods and overall design.

Indeed, mistakes are made, and no matter how rare they are the one person who gets the bad one will be just as disappointed. I have no doubt that the next one will be awesome, and this is a great reason to deal with trusted retailers.

You must have been devastated or #DEVASTED? to send it back. There's no local shop that can sharpen it for you? Many prefer to re-profile the factory edge. That's what #Ankerson does for his testing. #that'swhatIwouldhavedone. Hope the next one doesn't disappoint.

Mine was nice and even, I believe I got it from a reputable dealer (non BF sponsor). It's quite pricey so I'd expect an ideal example, nothing less. Anyhoo me and my wife are very happy with it, hope you are also with the replacement.

Protip: The dealers I frequent allows you to leave a brief message for them during an order. I always ask them to check for an ideal example. Note can be as simple as "Please check for QC, thanks!", I get more detailed than that though hehe. Saves me the trouble of possibly getting a faulty knife.

When buying a knife with that price tag and steel it shouldn't be necessary to resharpen it. Yes, people like to do that with new knives, but it shouldn't come with a grind as bad as described.

And by the way, if I see hashtags here again I'll be absolutely #DEVASTED!!

Hi Snake,

Glad you got it sorted. Maybe we'll get to see it?

My apologies to you and my thanx to HH for their exceptional service.

Hi Sal, nice to 'meet' you!

I will post the pics asap. This one is ground straight as a die.

As far as QC is concerned, at the end of the day things slip through. What I would point out is two things:

1) although the knife was aesthetically not up to standard, I doubt very much that the off-centred grind would have affected actual performance

2) no matter how careful you are, bad examples WILL slip through - that is inevitable. Anyone who understands manufacturing knows that.
