Recently I came upon an unusual but (in my opinion) very attractive knife made by Southpaw Knives. I've been trying to find info on this knife such as how well it holds up, edge retention, basically just a general review. I would really appreciate it if any of you guys here on the forums could spread some light on this interesting knife.

A link to the website can be found here -> http://www.southpaw-knives.com/PEGASUS.htm

Like I said, any new info other than whats on the site would be greatly appreciated.

Wow! That is a crude looking knife for $300, there should be better fit and finish. The 154cm steel should be alright, but the weird looking serrations and the "Tom Brown Tracker" blade shape is very poorly ground. Some of the other knives on the site look ok, but most look very poorly finished. I would spend my $300 elsewhere. Good luck to you on your purchase, or on your knives, which ever applies.

Thanks. I thought the same thing about the finish as well as the blade shape. However, I found a few other reviews of different southpaw knives and all seemed very pleased with the performance of their knives. Also, I can appreciate the time the guy spends making these. All of them are made to order and all have some small differences because he makes them (by hand) to order... so I've read.

I wasn't really even seriously considering purchasing this, I just would really like to hear an overall opinion. Even so, I do appreciate the input.

In all honesty, I do think the knife looks cool as hell.

No experience with Southpaw but check out http://www.jakehobackknives.com/. He uses arguably better steels, his designs are in line with the type of knives you're looking at, he is well established, has excellent communication with buyers and his prices are great for what you get. He has a wait but it is worth it.

wow....that thing is a disgrace to everyone who calls themself a knifemaker :barf:

How so? I can understand it appearing crude due to the finish but that's part of the handmade appeal to me at least. Plus, the knife in the photo appears worn as if it has been used a bit. Crude I can deal with, but a disgrace? That seems a little harsh to me...

Thanks for that. I do like his designs. Although I'm not really looking to buy anything at the moment I'll be sure to keep them in mind next time I'm scouring the interwebs for a new knife.

Hello:
I have two Southpaw, Risky flipper an a Rescue one with Z GRAV technology. Ira makes very solid knives and have a handmade look to them. If you interested in buying either one let me know. Trying to downsize. Both are new and one of two every made for each from what I hear. Thanks

Finally, someone with experience buying from Southpaw. You saw both are very solid, but just in your opinion how would they compare to other knives you've owned in terms of durability, edge retention and the like. I would greatly appreciate anything you could answer.
Sadly, I'm not terribly interested in buying either of those, sorry. It'll be a while before I buy another knife. I'm just trying to find a knife that's gonna be unique, yet at least semi-practical (sacrifices must be made), and worth the money in terms of quality.

I feel the Southpaws are very nice, the Rescue 1 is one of two made, his Z Grav Technology provides really fast deployment. The blades are very dull from new, Ira mentions this on his website, states this is how they come. I personally feel if your looking for something different and geared toward lefties, check his knives out. Have a bunch of customs, Todd Begg, Sniper Bladeworks, Yuna, Burchtree, Kingdom Armory, etc etc. I would rate his work as tough as the Burchtree but not refined like a Begg. Scale of one to ten, a 8.5. Hope this helps.

Make a knife and see what tou can do, step up.

Totally!

BTW, I think it looks kind of cool. It has a worn look, like a more aggressive working finish. Just because one dislikes a design doesn't make it a disgrace.

Indeed. That's one of the things I like about it. It looks gritty and worn. The texture to the blade and finish give it character.

Hope this helps.

Indeed it did and I greatly appreciate the feedback. My main goal of this thread was to get an idea of the quality of Ira's knives. I just recently stumbled across the Pegasus and I believe I'm gonna get one once I have the money.
