One of my favorite patterns. This Bulldog "Cuttin' Horse" Sowbelly especially so. The way the blades are shaped and angled downward puts the blade into the cut before you start any arm motion. The term cuttin' horse is from the way you describe a tool. Like, "It's a real horse"!!

.. This is one of my most favorite knives(pattern & make) in all the world.. The lines on this beauty are simply sublime!.

One of Bob Cargill's Strawberry Bone five blade Sowbelly Cripple Creek knives..

I have heard several debates over the years about how many of these were actually produced, however, I have yet to hear a definitive accounting of the actual total number. Does anyone really know?

Those are sweet looking knives. Do you know when the 'sowbelly' pattern first emerged? Was it a natural evolution of the stockman? Thanks s-k

S & S,

Mr. McGreg will have to confirm this but I believe that is one of the original Bulldogs and were built with more heft and had pinched bolsters and were tang stamped: "Hammer Forged" and "Hand Made" and "English Steel" Bulldogs of the mid 1980's built in Soligen Germany

The Strawberry Bone 5 blade Cripple Creek sowbelly is a pretty rare one. To my knowledge, there were less than 25 of them built. An exact number? I doubt you're gonna get one. The Bulldog Sowbelly is from Olbertz in Germany and a fairly recent issue.
The one in the photo is Ivory handled.

Here's another Bulldog and a Cripple Creek Sowbelly. The Fight'n Rooster Sowbelly Whittler is a cool one for sure!

I'm hoping Waynorth will post a few of his Sowbellies in here. You know he's got a boat load of 'em !

If I'm lucky, I have one newer Case tucked away somewhere, Greg. As nice as they are, I've never collected them. You have to make tough choices sometimes, and try as you might, you can't collect them all!
Now, I'm waiting till other threads die down, and I'm going to start a whittler thread, unless someone beats me to it (I hope they wait a bit). I collected those for years.
BTW, have you got any Hawkbills to add to that thread. Most people don't bother with them, but you can gather quite a nice bunch for little money!
I'm enjoying the Sowbellies! Keep them coming!

I like the Hawbills. Especially the older ones. I don't have any at all tho. You're right, you can't collect 'em all ! I'll stick a few more photos of the Sowbelly in here soon. Lookin' forward to the whittler thread.

Nice Greenbone ! That is part of a 5 knife set of greenbones. They were all made in different years. The entire Green River Rendezvous set consists of a sowbelly, copperhead, whittler, trapper and a dogleg trapper. Here's a stag sowbelly. Sorry for the blurry photos. My better camera is in the shop so I am having to use my 1.2 mp for a while.

I didn't have this for more than a few months and I've already posted it once before, but here's a Reese Bose sowbelly that he entered in the Blade Show. I was told he has only made three or four, and this was the first in pearl. I sold it and bought a canoe.:o
